Cloth Diapers

Hi everyone

I would love to hear from some mommies out there that use cloth diapers. This is my first child and my husband and I are considering using cloth diapers. I know there are a lot of brands and varieties out there but I was wondering in your experiences have been and brands that you would recommend.

Thanks

Re: Cloth Diapers

  • I love Bumgenius One Sized diapers. That way I can use them from birth (almost) to 35 lbs. I have heard great things about Fuzzibunz (though they aren't for me), Swaddlebees and Tots Bots. I just ordered some of these today. There are tons of types of diapers. The "one sized" work best for me but other swear by all in ones" or prefolds. You may want to watch some intro youtube videos to educate yourself or go over to the cloth diapering board on here!

  • We Cd'd DD; she just turned 2 and we just finished PTing. We will be CDing again.

We used a variety of Cds; I bought prefolds and thirsties and econobum covers, which I really liked but I used those mainly at home. For Daycare or when grandparents were babysitting, we had mostly BumGenius AIOs or pocket diapers or flips diapers that we prestuffed.

I didn't CD for awhile at night because I thought using BGs was the best option; those always leaked at night. However, what I found was best was using Hemp prefolds with a hemp double and a microfiber insert (usually the newborn size from BGs) underneath, with an econobum cover.

Also, if you plan on working, make sure you invest in at least 2 wetbags to take to and from DC. The other thing is to use a good cloth diaper detergent from the start. I started using free &clear detergent, and my daughter would get terrible rashes. Once I switched to Rockin Green, that was all gone.

Hope that helps! I really liked Cding; it really isn't that much harder than disposables and it saves a ton of money, which was the real impetus for doing it in the first place.

We use cloth diapers with DS.  Similar to a previous poster we used prefolds and covers when my son was very little.  As he got bigger and more wiggly I found changes were easier with pocket diapers, and all in ones. When I was doing research about cloth diapering online all of the information was very confusing.  What helped the most was going to a cloth diaper workshop where you could actually see the different types and learn all about the laundry etc... If you can find a store near you see if they have this, if not even going in and talking to someone in person will make such a difference.

We use Blueberry and Swaddlebees one size pockets.  I got Lil Joeys NB and Swaddlebees NB simplex for our new LO.

The cloth diaper board is a great resource here.  Check out the FAQ section up at the top of the board.  It helped me a lot.

  • I'm a FTM so I don't have any experience, and I'm pretty clueless too.  But I did find out that there are several baby stores in my city that offer FREE CD classes, and one of them offer trial service.  That's what I'm planning to do at this point - take the class and probably do a trial.  Since I've read that every baby is different, I don't want to end up with a big stash of CDs that don't fit my LO!

  • I cd-ed DD and DS. I've tried many kinds/brands and my favorite are fuzzi bunz. It's been great for us.

  • I really considered cloth when I was PG with DS. Took the classes, researched like crazy, the whole nine yards. One point to consider that I didn't think about/was aware of. What will you be feeding this child? I am not able to BF and have to FF. Formula poop is totally different than BM poop. The stains seriously do not come out of his clothes, and I can't imagine trying to get it out of diapers and then reusing them. Especially because you can't use traditional stain sprays on cloth diapers. They do make little liners that you can put in so the poop stays on top, but I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes. Just make two cents, take it for what it's worth.

  • We have a store in our town that offers cloth diaper rentals for newborns, they give you 24 diapers roughly & they're different brands so you can try them with out committing to them. They also give you a special laundry bag & soap.  I'm a FTM and I'm going to go this route 1st & if it works then we'll purchase the brand that works for us.

Its something to think about. You might have some thing similar in your area.

  • i am planning to use the one size Bumgenius diapers and also some prefolds with covers such as Thirsties.. I do plan to also see some videos on CD and also maybe look up a rental service in my area..
  • We use Indian Prefolds & Thirsties covers about 80% of the time with DD. She does fine with prefolds even at her age. Yes, she's squirmy but it's hard to get a disposable on her right now too. We have a few pocket diapers (maybe 4) that we use mostly during the nights. I really enjoy using cloth and it's a huge money saver. I really encourage you to try it for awhile. You can get trial packs of all different kinds online. I think you keep the ones you want and get money back for the ones you send back...?
  • My cousin used them for her twin girls until they were 1.  It saved her a ton of money.  I am interested in doing it also.  I just need to research it more.
  • We use Fuzzi Bunz One Size. Daycare will use them, so that is more or less what we use. I have a few prefolds/fitteds and cover from when DD was really young and I have a stack of Kawaii One Size that we used, but FB are our go-to diapers. I would highly recommend using a diaper trial, they have them at www.jilliansdrawers.com and that way you can figure out what you like. What works for some might not work for you!

  • We use mostly all-in-ones, with a few all-in-twos.  They are the simplest and most similar to disposables.  But they also cost more than prefolds and covers, for instance.  I could have dealt with the "more complicated" versions, but I wanted my husband and all caretakers to be on board, so we stuck with "easy" and it has worked very well for us.

    Brands we like:

Bum Genius (sized, though they now have a one-size all-in-one); note: we tried (and wanted to love) the Flip system, but it just didn't work for us.

    BottomBumpers (one-size)

    Thirsties (one-size)

    SoftBums (one-size)

Also of note -- the one-size diapers are pretty bulky on newborns, so even if you go with one-size for most of your stash, you may want to invest in some sized diapers for the first few months.

My milk completely dried up at 8 months and dd2 went on formula.  While it stained her clothes like crazy, you'd be surprised by how much easier it washed out of diapers.  :)

  • I just responded to another post asking about CDs, but I'll add here too.  We use Kawaii one size pocket diapers, and I love them!  They are really inexpensive and fit DS really well.  But you'll need something smaller than a one size for a newborn, or just do sposies until then.  I've also mentioned I have a full week of cloth diaper info on my blog in April, but I also like the CD board FAQs on the bump, check that out as well!
