C-sections

to those momma's who had a c-section after failed induction/no progress

Did your LO lose a good amount of weight after birth? My son weighed 7lbs13oz when he was born (9:57 PM on a Thursday) and by Sunday morning he was 7lbs even.  The pediatrician told me that it was probably because of all the IV fluids I got over the course of my 72 hour induction.

The reason I excluded scheduled c-sections from the post title is I assume that for a schedule c-section you don't have to get enough IV fluid to cause the baby to retain some fluid too. I got 11 bags of IV fluid during my induction/c-section.

  • Mine weighed 9.5 & was 9.1 when we left the hospital. She never dropped below that & had passed her birth weight in 2 weeks (was 9.9 by then).

  • Yes, DS was born at 9lbs 9oz, left the hospital at 8lbs. That was because my milk never came in though.

  • Yes, he did.

LO was born at 7.2 and went down to 6.7 in the hospital. The drs said my milk was slow to come in and he was probably a bit bloated from the fluids. He gained his birth weight back by his 2 week appointment though so all was well.

  • No induction here, but I did have a c-section after failure to progress. DS was born 8 lb 10 oz, and got down to 7 lb 14 oz. I was on the IV for 8 hours before he was born.

  • I was induced with DD and ended up with an emergency c-section after 27+ hours of labor. DD weighted 9 pounds 6 ounces and came home from the hospital weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces. So she lost a pound but by her 2 week check up she was back to her birth weight and then some.

It is pretty typical for baby's to lose a bunch of weight after birth, especially when breastfeeding. If your pedi is not concerned I wouldn't be.

  • Yes.  DS was born at 7lbs 14oz and was down to 7lbs 1oz when we left.  Part of the problem was I was trying to nurse but my milk never came in.  The day after we left the hospital he had a weight check and had lost another ounce.  I then I had to formula feed after that.
  • Lucas dropped below the normal 10% weight loss and he was a scheduled section. His drop was due to jaundice/lazy eating/ bad latcher.

  • I have a theory about this, I know you are all excited :)

With a C-section we are in the hospital longer than with a natural delivery, up to four days vs. as short as 24 hours. This means the babies are monitored longer and you know what they weigh everyday. I think most babies drop a lot of weight and then gain it back when milk comes in. C-section babies we just know about it because we are still in the hospital.

  • I think my failure to progress baby lost the least, but I probably supplemented with formula the most with him.  My 3rd DC and 2nd scheduled c/s probably lost the most.  He lost over 10% by day 3.

  • My daughter only went from 7lbs 14oz at birth to 7lbs 10oz while in the hospital because she needed to have heart surgery (balloon valvoplasty for pulmonary valve stenosis) and she could not be fed immediately after.  She was already taking 30ml of formula from the first night and only got one bottle of breastmilk a day because that was all I could pump.

  • Yes, DS was born at 6'15 and by the time we went home four days later he was 6'5.  I figured it happened because my milk didn't come in until like 8 days after but I also got a ridiculous amount of fluid and was swollen like I never thought possible (still not completely gone at 5 weeks PP).

  • My son had dropped below the 10% when we left but it was because my milk hadn't come in and even if it had I still wasn't nursing as often as I should have been.  I was letting him sleep...I still feel like a bad mommy about that.

I also agree with mdharris29 theory above.

  • All babies lose a lot of weight in the first few days. Up to 10% is considered normal.

  • LO was 6lb 9oz at birth. then dropped to 6lbs even and at the end of the week when we left the hospital he was 7lbs.

  • Wyatt was born at 9 pounds 15 oz. and when we took him to the drs a few days later he was I believe at 8 pounds 2 oz. The dr said losing that much weight is normal but if he kept dropping then there's  problem. I had an appt to get induced and then my body wouldn't progress so I ended up having a c section.

  • I find this theory fascinating and never considered it before.

G was born weighing 8lb, 0oz. When we left the hospital on day 3, she was down to 7lb, 5oz. Because the drop was more than 8%, we had to go in for a weight check the following day. By that point, she was down to 7lb, 2oz, which was more than 10% of her birth weight. My milk was just starting to come in that morning, but the pedi talked me into giving her formula. I've had a lot of anguish over relenting on that. To consider that her birth weight could have been inflated due to 22 hours of IV just p1sses me off even more!
