Tell me about Lawrence...

Hi ladies,

I'd love some advice about the Lawrence area. We haven't moved to IN yet, but I really like what I've seen so far online regarding Lawrence.

Any feedback would be appreciated.  We're most interested in finding a family-friendly neighborhood with good public schools. Does Lawrence fit that bill?

I think it's pretty nice - we're looking in that area too.  I asked some teachers at our church which school districts they would recommend within the Indianapolis city limits and they said either Washington or Lawrence.  I haven't done a lot of research on specific neighborhoods yet though.

  • Hi! My husband grew up in the area and we just bought a house here earlier this year. It is wonderful! Not far from the city, but far enough to feel like a small town. It is perfect for families. Best of luck with your move!

  • I have a couple of friends that live in housing additions in Lawrence and there are def several families with children in both those housing additions.  I haven't heard much negative about the school systems there either.  I know several teachers that teach at the high school (they were high school teachers of mine and moved schools a few years after I graduated).  If you do not like the school districts there are also a few private schools to choose from that are not extremely expensive.  Not sure if you def want to live on the north side of town, but I would also recommend looking into the southside of Indy like Southport and Greenwood.  Good luck in your search Big Smile

  • Lawrence has fine schools, but I would second the previous poster - take a look at the southside of Indy.  Greenwood has some nice neighborhoods, and the Franklin Township School District is great!  (It would be cheaper to live down there, too).  Depending on where your job (or S.O.'s job) is, it can be a headache getting from Lawrence to. . .er, well, anywhere.  :)
  • Northern Lawrence is a great area. I've only heard good things about the school. But, there is a bad part of Lawrence, so beware of that. Just stay away from Pendleton Pike/Post Road area.

  • I grew up on the northeast side of Lawrence and went to Lawrence North High School. I would definitely advise you to stay on the north side, castleton area. The south side of Lawrence (south of 56th St) is questionable as far as safety is concerned. We lived around 75th St and Shadeland Ave, in a very nice area.
  • I live in Lawrence and have 2 small children (almost 1 & almost 3).  Our neighborhood is full of kids in all age ranges and everyone is very friendly.  We are located just south of 86th street off of Carroll Rd and the area is very nice and safe.  It's just south of Geist.  I've heard good things about the public schools and if you wanted private schools there are a few close by too.  We're in the far northeast corner, right on the border of Hamilton County and Hancock County.  I agree with some of the other posters to stay away from certain parts of Lawrence, but I really love our area!  Good luck in your search - PM me if you need a real estate agent - I know a great one & would be happy to refer you.

  • My husband and I have lived in Lawrence for 3 years this month. Just like any city, there are good & bad parts. We both grew up in the country so we knew we wanted a hometown feel to our neighborhood, but remain close to stores & restaurants. We are so happy in our home & neighborhood. We have amazing neighbors (our veterinarians are actually across the street) & we always feel safe. We do not have children yet, but I hear great things about the schools. Good luck on your search!
