Re: Health insurance cp

  • With H getting another job, he isn't eligible for insurance through his work for a while. I looked it up at my work and to cover me, H, and C, its around a third of every paycheck. So right now, we are not insured. Fortunately, we have a little bit of money coming in that will be put aside for medical emergencies, and hopefully if I get a teaching or other job, we will be able to afford it again.

  • Technically through DH's work... but it's through an employer.

  • I'm seen through the VA. H and LO are covered under insurance through his work.

  • H has health insurance through work but his employer doesn't offer a dependent option, so A and I have private plans. A has a great plan but I have a high deductible plan that is mostly accident/injury coverage.

  • I answered "Yes, through my work" but it's really through DH's work. He has really good health insurance and I'm thankful that all 3 of us can be on it for a good price and good co-pays.

If I got a job that offered health insurance, then his job would force me to get off of his policy and use there's though :/ I used to work with annuities before working with the daycare. My former job had awesome insurance and at that time I was on my own insurance and he was on his own insurance.

There was a 90 day period where we had to go without insurance because of his job change. But we put LO on COBRA (and only LO...  that sh*t is expensive).

What does this mean? Isn't this a good thing?

Is privatized insurance better? I had private insurance when I first became a resident, and it was awesome, but I don't qualify for it anymore.

Generally, if you get it through an employer, they pay for all/some/part of your premiums.  Also, you generally tend to get a better policy since it is a group of people & they get a better deal.

None of that is a guarantee though.  Sometimes you get s'hit insurance & still pay through the nose for it through your employer.

I think that's what we will do. I still have another three weeks to sign up through my work. It just blows that it costs almost twice as much as the one we had and doesn't cover as much.

  • Currently, we are covered through my work.  However, we have had all of the above before.  When we first got married DH didn't have dependent coverage and it was just too dang expensive for me to get coverage when we were barely making ends meet.  Then, we got individual plans because DH got a different job that didn't have benefits.  Between myself and DH we were spending about $800 per month on it.  It was really good insurance though.  My current job is through the state and it is much better coverage than I have ever had and is also the least expensive we have ever had.  It covers all three of us for $80 a month after my $108 stipend to cover dependents.
  • As a family, we are covered through DH's employer. I also have a secondary private policy until we're done having babies because my pregnancies are always so full of complication, they get really expensive. For example, I'm 20 weeks now and I've had 14 ultrasounds. Only 2 are covered by our primary insurance, so it can really add up.

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • I picked "yes through my job" but its really "yes through DH's work"

Same for us! We have been very fortunate to have great coverage without too much out of pocket expense.

  • I picked "yes, individual" but really we're paying COBRA through my work.  The only option for our COBRA is family or nothing.  It costs us 2/3 of my unemployment.

This.  However, my husband works for the county and the union has been in contract negotiations for at least 2 years with the broke county.  So, the good price, co-pays, & coverage could all change any day.  :(

  • Well, I chose "yes, private policy". Technically it's through our business, but we're a small business of two so it's a private policy.

Our copays aren't bad so long as nobody gets terribly ill.  Our annual premiums would make you lose your breath. It's astounding.  And then the high deductible if we have issues, the $250/ER visit copay. . .  I think it costs us $100 for Urgent Care.

This for me also, so I picked the first choice.

  • H has his policy through work and P is on that. I have my coverage through Tricare Reserve Select. It is slightly cheaper for us to have two different policies. I get out of the military in February so I'll either have NO Insurance or go on H's policy.

  • DD is covered through the state. Not Medicaid but NJFamily care. DH & I are not covered. His employer (his family) doesn't offer it because they cannot afford it & I'm unemployed. His mom tried looking into getting us a plan but gave me a bunch of stories about how we'd have to wait 18 months to get it & or because I have a pre-existing condition they could deny us. Whatever.

  • We used to be on my work policy, but now on DH's.  His is much better, I wish we had moved to it earlier even though it was slightly more expensive.

My work policy just added a "you have to be dying" clause to ER visits.  basically, if your condition isn't "life threatening" ER visits won't be paid for.  Broken leg? go to urgent care.

Yes. But I still don't understand American insurance, and it's a rubbish situation with this insurance company.

    Sigh.

Yes, it can be quite confusing at times, I suggest that you get a better understanding of it on a whole before you get coverage. If considering it seriously you should sit with a few different agents ask them to tell you about the different health insurance policies that they have, ask whats their opinion on what you should get etc.

After this i believe you will have a better grasp of it and be more able to make a decision on you needs. This is what I did :)

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Urgent care has business hours where the ER does not. If something needs stitches late at night, the ER is your only option. Waiting until morning for something that needs stitches is a really bad call. The longer the wound is open, the more likely it will get infected if it is stitched closed.

It's also a bad idea in that it might discourage people from allowing an ambulance to take them to the ER for necessary treatment. Think about someone having chest pains... they're not sure yet if they are having a heart attack and the ambulance wants to take them to the ER. They know they can't afford an ER visit so they decline a transport and decide to go to Urgent care instead. This puts off important and life saving treatment.

There are so many things that are seriously messed up with health insurance right now.

  • I am so thankful for our insurance.  H works for Trader Joe's, and we have Anthem Blue Cross.  We pay $210/month for the three of us, with $20 copays, $50 ER copay ($0 if you are admitted), and no deductible.  All well-child visits and any preventative care is free.  All of my prenatal care, plus L&D cost us $200 for the pediatrician visit in the hospital, since we saw the on-call doctor.  Our hospital copay was even waived because I signed up for a "program" which consisted of two "how are you doing?" phone calls over the course of my pregnancy.

The only downside to great coverage is that we're kind of trapped in his job.  He's close to topping out on the hourly rate, and management actually has worse coverage.

  • I work for the state and my health benefits are one of the main reasons I stay at my job. I have a family plan that covers me, LO and DH.
