2nd Trimester

baby supposed to be scared by sudden noises?

i read somewhere that after a certain week, your baby is able to react to loud, sudden noises like dogs barking or cars honking by giving violent kicks or something like that. i don't know about y'all, but my DD doesn't seem to do that. is that a cause for concern? i never felt her violently kick me out of nowhere just because my dog barks or a loud sudden noise happens. does that mean something bad?

  • Meh, my kid never did.

  • I don't think so.  My first didn't do this. She did enjoy music though.  I used DJ style headphones and she would move to where the music was.  She still loves it today.

mine isn't but he is super excited when i talk about food or start eating. dh just mentioned making and egg sandwich and i got a kick and a punch. i think he's hungry Big Smile
  • They can be startled by loud noises.

But remember what your perceive as loud probably isn't to the baby. She's under your skin, muscles and then is floating around in water.

  • actually the babies may bet startled but after awhile they get used to it.  Cathleen was never startled by the dogs barking after birth.  In fact she even slept through the mailman showing up.

  • The only thing that ever seemed to startle DS while he was in utero was the fire alarm at the school where I teach.  He has perfect hearing now, so I don't think it means anything if your LO doesn't always react to noise.

I never felt DD move violently, but we were at a movie that was really loud and she was definitely moving around a whole lot more than usual.

  • Our little girl hasn't reacted violently... or to dogs barking or anything, but yesterday we were at my hubby's command picnic for work and when I walked past the DJ and speakers, I definitely felt her jump! But, it was loud enough that it made me want to plug my ears too, so I can't say I blame her! :) We'll see how she reacts to the fireworks here in a couple weeks!

  • I've only noticed it with VERY loud sounds. I go to my husband's basketball games every monday night and when the buzzer sounds, its really, really loud and she kicks right after/during. She never kicks when the dogs bark or for any other sounds consistently so I wouldn't worry.

  • My daughter did not display a startle reflex until a few weeks out. She's totally normal. Actually, she's extraordinary. :)
