Zoloft and antibiotics during pregnancy

I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant.  I'm taking 100mg of Zoloft, and have been for the last 5 or so months.  When I found out I was expecting, I asked the doc and she advised me to keep taking it.  I also have had BV the whole pregnancy and was perscribed an antibiotic (metronidazole) by the doc 2 times and it didn't cure it.  I went in yesterday since the BV still appeared to be there and sure enough, it was.  I saw a different doc this time and he perscribed me cleonicin (sp?).

Has anyone else taken Zoloft and/or antibiotics during pregnancy and had a healthy baby?  I'm so paranoid.

Re: Zoloft and antibiotics during pregnancy

  • The doctors will either A) Prescribe you baby-safe meds or B) Prescribe you meds because the benefits outweigh the potential risk. Take the antibiotics and also a probiotic called Femidolphus (talk your dr if concerned). BV is difficult to get rid of because it's an imbalance of bacteria in your vaginal tract. The antibiotics kill ALL the bacteria and the probiotic will replenish the good bacteria. I've had BV on and off for years, before ever becoming pregnant.

  • I have been on Lexapro for the first 19 weeks, and as I get to 20 weeks, I have to switch to Zoloft because there is more research that it is a safer drug while pregnant. The jury is still out on Lexapro since it is a newer drug.
  • I took Zoloft before becoming pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant I stopped, my doctor did tell me that should I need ot I could continue to take it because it is one of the "safe" medications. So far I have done fairly well off of it. At the start of the pregnancy I had a hard time becoming excited over being pregnant, even though it had taken us three years to get to this point!! I have only had a few episodes of being down and one or two times when I became very mad for no reason.

I have been advised by the high risk doctor that it would be in my best interest to start taking it shortly before the baby is born or after. I'm at a higher risk for postpartum depression. I want to avoid this so I will start taking it shortly before baby boy is born.

In the long run it comes down to what happens when you don't take the medication. If you don't take it and your mood drastically changes it will negatively affect your health which in the end affects the babies health.

  • I took metronidazole when I was pregnant with my daughter, and Zoloft when I was nursing.  She's perfect.
