TTC after 35

What tests should I have done before RE appt?

I have an appt next month with an RE. We have no infertility coverage so everything is out of pocket. my new OB ran some tests in the meantime (clomid challenge), which indicated I have a high FSH. I'm reading a book called Making Babies that discusses some simple tests that can and should be done to rule things out. What tests do you think should be done or have you had done? I'm trying to get the OB to order them so at least they will be covered and so I can have them for my appt.

Have you been charting? Most docs find it helpful if they have all that information as well as the blood-work. Some ladies here have also said that their REs ended up wanting to re-run the tests done previously by the OB, so just be aware that your RE may do the same. Others are happy to use the results already obtained.

Other ladies here can correct me or add to the list, but I believe that REs test thyroid function, insulin resistance, reproductive hormone levels (FSH, estrogen, etc)... I'm sure there is more.

  • My OB tested my FSH, estradiol and thyroid levels.

So far, my RE has done 7 DPO bloodwork to test my progesterone level (mine was 17.73), general testing of various hormone levels (I'm not sure which ones), an insulin tolerance test (waiting on results), a transvaginal ultrasound and a SA for my husband. I'm sure your OB can order the same kinds of tests, but like PP said, your RE may want to re-run them.

    Good luck to you!

  • thanks ladies!  Have either of you heard or had the test for infections (bacteria)?  Im reading Making Babies and I guess the author (also an RE) tests for this and its a simple test.  Also there is a test to check how the CM is and how the CM is with the sperm in it?  Ive been warned that my RE pushes IVF automatically so I dont want him to just jump to that without looking at other things as well.

I think this is the postcoital test? That's the next test he's going to do after I have my lap for endometriosis. He said to call him when I get a +OPK next cycle (or maybe the next one if I don't ovulate before my lap), have sex that night and come in the very next morning to get this test done.

  • I've had tests for ovarian reserve- Day 3 FSH, E2, and AMH.  I've also had a thyroid panel and prolactin.  Before starting IVF, the doc wanted an up to date pap smear, mammogram, and infectious disease testing.  I had to push for saline sonogram.  None of the REs I went to said an HSG was needed.  My OB kept pushing genetic testing (for CF), but we have no family history and are OOP, so are forgoing this.

    Here's a good listing of tests: https://www.advancedfertility.com/evaluate.htm

    DH also had an SA.

The post coital test is very simple- like a pap- some docs like this and some think it is very outdated.
