NWMR - Anyone else with migraines?

I have had classic migraines (with visual aura) for years now, but they have always been pretty well controlled as long as I keep my iron levels up with supplements (one every 3-6 months or so). I definitely got a bunch of them in the first trimester, then pretty much nothing until I delivered and got a few more. I haven't had one for months, and now all of the sudden I have gotten one three days in a row!! I wonder if this is from hormonal changes? I  EBF so not sure something would all of the sudden change right now. I did check to see if I'm pregnant, and thankfully I'm not. Just curious if anyone else has had a similar issue and why you think it might be happening.

Re: NWMR - Anyone else with migraines?

  • My migraines are always quite bad after birth, like I am popping a migraine pill almost daily.  I definitely think it's related to your hormones trying to even out again and even though you EBF your cycles may be about to come back.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Yeah mine honestly didn't change much at all when I was preg.  They have gotten worse since I had him.  More days of migraines.  I'm sorry it blows.

Yep, this totally stinks. I honestly had forgotten that I even got them, and then all of the sudden they are pretty much no-stop. I always get freaked out because a neurologist I saw a long time ago told me I really need to try to minimize having them because each time you get one it causes lesions in your brain. Yikes!

I get classic migraines with aura also. I usually get 1-2 a year. This was while in topamax and Mirena IUD. Mine are stress and hormone related. Well I spoke to my neuro when I got the Mirena out. I'd been off topamax a while since they were so infrequent. It's also a class D now. and we decided to go med free. In October I had 8 in a 10 day period. I got put on 400mg of vitamin b2 and 400mg if magnesium daily. I've had 2-3 migraines since my bfp and that's it. We chalked up the October issue to extreme weather changes. Otherwise, it was business as usual. Migraines suck.

  • I get them once a month at least. Unfortunately, I am the lucky one to inherit migraines after having DS. My mom has them and I have them. The treatment I use is advil migraine. And it is always different parts of my head that hurt and not my forehead.

Last night, I had one and popped 3 advils gel caps because I was cramping and on my period.

Oh migraines. The worst thing! I used to get them a lot and then found my trigger (artificial sweetener Splenda) and haven't had one in 3 years because of it! I thank God all the time because they were the worst and basically were giving me panic attacks because I always worried one was coming. I'd just encourage you (and I am sure you've tried) not to give up on seeking your triggers.

This 100%. I kept a migraine journal and found that while mine were hormone related and coincided with my cycle, they were much worse when I had gluten.  Its a huge PITA to give up gluten, but I feel so much better.  FWIW, I had my 6 week check and my OB mentioned that your estrogen levels change significantly 2-3 months post partum, so that may be what's setting you off.  Sorry, I know how awful they are.
