Long running fever

Fark. Farck.  F this!

LO has had a fever since last week Wednesday.  We've been cooped up at home for a week now, and today he went off the Motrin since his temp was down, but now it's at 102.3 and I have to give him more.  I was so happy today thinking we were done with it.  He was hovering at 99-100 and still sleeping late/napping longer so I knew he wasn't completely well.

We were at the dr. last week and this week and the only conclusion is that it's a virus running its course.  No pneumonia, no ear infection, no strep or anything else they checked for.  I called today and told them his temps and that it seemed like he was on the mend.  I'll call back tomorrow and report his temps from tonight/tomorrow morning.

Any advice?  Suggestions?  Anyone deal with something similar?

  • Roseola can cause a fever for up to a week before it breaks and the rash appears. I had one child with a 3 day fever and another with a 7 day. I started to freak me out b/c I didn't know it could last that long. I was happy when I saw the rash appear. Maybe that could be it?

  • Thanks.  I guess we'll have to wait and see.  He doesn't seem to have any of the symptoms listed.  It all started with a night time cough.

ETA: It's a relief to know other parents have been through something similar and it wasn't a serious illness.

  • I hope he feels better soon. Roseola can start with a mild respiratory illness. Neither child seemed to show that symptom, but they were both a little sluggish and one had a noticeable decrease in appetite.

This is true for us.  I am so ready for him to be healthy!  He's got periods during the day when he's his normal self, but then he poops out.

Weird. DD is on day 5 of a fever and weird symptoms. Her virus also started with a cough, and her ears, throat and chest were also clear when I had her at the pedi on Sunday. Her fever was only over 102 for two days, though, and has been in the 99-100 range for the last three.

I don't want to be the douchebag that freaks you out but my pedi mentioned that they were seeing whooping cough in the area lately. And yes, kids who have had all their vaccinations on time can still get it, although unlikely. I'm in NY. I plan to bring her in tomorrow so they can test her for it and check her lungs again because the cough is the only thing getting worse.

Questions out of curiosity - is he congested or sneezing at all, or just a little drippy? Is he acting more sick than he has with cold viruses in the past? Is his sleep suffering? These are all issues I'm having with DD. And FWIW, she has had roseola, too, and I don't think that's what your DS has if he's coughing.

Whooping cough aside, I would take the rise in your son's temp to mean that an infection may have developed. Maybe he was fighting a virus and needs his ears or chest checked again? Def see what your pedi says tomorrow! Hope he feels better soon.

Thanks, hope your DD is also on the mend!

No sneezing, and some head congestion.  Pedi checked him last Friday and his lungs sound good, checked him again Monday and lungs were still good.  Monday they also did a chest x-ray and strep test just to check.

His two older brothers have also had a lingering cough and have been checked by the pedi and ruled it just a virus.  They haven't had any other symptoms.

Pedi mentioned the only other test they could do for LO is draw blood and test for mono, but he said they typically don't see mono in kids this young and don't want to put them through the trauma of the blood draw.
