Cloth Diapering

Can someone explain wicking?

Will someone explain wicking to me?  I've never been sure of that term.  How do I know if my covers are doing it?

Recently DS has felt wet up by the tabs at his hips where I snap the diaper closed.  But the soaker pad is not fully saturated.  Is this wicking?  Or just a fluke about how his pee soaks in?

If the inner cloth touches baby's clothes, the moisture will wick onto the clothes from fabric to fabric. I use prefolds and covers. If I don't tuck the cloth into the cover all the way around, it will wick onto her clothes (took me a while to figure that out!!) Also, if the TAG on the cover is sticking out...it will wick onto her clothes.

  • I ended up with a leg full of pee in front of my students when I brought DD to show them :S

I'll remember not to rush diaper changes from now on!

  • Wicking is just when the moisture travels through a fabric (or is transferred from fabric to fabric). One wet fabric touches another and then the other gets wet.  I've noticed that I have to be careful with onesies on my LO b/c sometimes the legs will curl inside the diaper and wick moisture and the onesie will get wet.
