Success after IF

What tests to have done???

Had first OBGYN appt. yesterday and he was really vague about all the testing. He basically said I should have the nuchal fold between 11&13 weeks and that was it. Is that right? I'm kind of confused about which tests are for what, and if I should really only be getting one. My delivery date is 11 days before my 35th birthday, if that makes a difference. What tests did you have or are you having done? Where they risky, was it worth it? Would really like the peace of mind of ruling out Downs. Thanks so much for any info, wasn't too thrilled with OBGYN yesterday.

Re: What tests to have done???

  • I just turned 35 and will be 35 when I deliver.  They recommended I have the NT screening 11-14 wks and depending on how that comes back, look into doing part of the Quad screen 16-20 wks.  Also due to age they recommended a Targeted or Level II ultrasound at 19-22 wks.

Before starting IVF, I tested negative for Cystic Fibrosis which would have been another thing they would have tested for.

We very briefly talked about the CVS and Amnio tests, but since they are more invasive, and carry a risk of m/c, we again went back to starting with the NT Screening.

From what I have read, the NT scan and the Level II u/s would help detect possible Down syndrome.

  • I just turned 31 in October and here is the testing that we opted to do:

We did the Nuchal Translucency test at 12 weeks, and at 15 1/2 weeks we also did the AFP.  The NT scan and bloodwork give you the likelihood or chance of your baby having Down's. Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 13.  The AFP tests for the same plus Spina Bifida.  We opted to do all the screening tests to have peace of mind and to be well prepared if something should come up.

Since we were in normal ranges for all these tests we no longer need to consider the amnio and will wait for the Level II ultrasound at 20 weeks.  GL!!  it is a personal decision but I am happy we went forward, I am now more relaxed.
