Baby Names

tell me your thoughts on Thomas

Now that we've found out it's a boy, everything has become more real! We had the name Thomas picked out forever (it is my maiden name) because we prefer a classic name and this one is underused in my area. But now I'm just re-thinking it to make sure it's the right name that we want. I still love the name. It's more just that I can't picture calling a baby Thomas. It seems more of an kid / adult name (which is also good that it is a name that can be grown into). Also, I don't know how I feel about the nickname Tommy and especially do not like Tom at all....and am thinking about family who might try to call him these nicknames, when I prefer Thomas. What do you think?

Re: tell me your thoughts on Thomas

  • I love love love Thomas and Tommy.

If you don't like nicknames, don't use them and politely ask those who do use them not to.  If a mom introduced her son "Thomas" to me, I'd call him Thomas - I wouldn't jump directly to Tommy.

If when he grows up your son likes being called Tommy at school and by his friends, you can't control that.

  • Thomas is one of my favorite boy names, but it's not on our list because DH doesn't like how it sounds with our LN. I know a Thomas and no one calls him Tom/Tommy.

  • I love Thomas!  Such a classic name, and just solid.  Love it.
Anniversary DS was born 11/30/12... so in love :)
  • Love and I don't hear it as much anymore...so underused too!  Bonus!

  • I love Thomas/Tommy, and I like Tom pretty well for an adult. If you want him to be called Thomas, tell your family/friends that is what you prefer. His friends may call him something else eventually, but whether or not he likes/tolerates it will be his business at that point.

  • I really like Thomas (my dad's middle name), and there are a few names you could call him without falling under the typical nickname.  Theo and Thor being the most original with it.

  • At one point, right after the u/s, we had almost settled on Thomas.  I think the main reason we didn't use it is that it's DH's uncle's name, and while we would have liked to honor him (and liked the name for other reasons as well), we weren't sure if we'd be stepping on his cousins' toes by using it - they aren't at kid-having age yet but will be eventually, and I think they might want to name a kid after him.  Kind of complicated.  Anyway, I think you should definitely use it, especially since it's your maiden name.

Very well said.  Personally, I love Thomas and Tommy but my last name starts with "Tom" and it just does not work.

  • I like Thomas/Tommy.  NN options would be to use the initials, T and whichever MN you choose. Tomas is cute too, although, not really any shorter than Thomas.

  • I'm a fan of Thomas. My husband is Thomas and he's a 4th so we are keeping tradition and will be naming (hoping to have a son) Thomas as well. I love the NN Tommy. Everyone calls my husband Tee, since his dad was Tom and his grandfather is Tommy.

  • I have a friend with a Thomas, and he's been called that since birth, so it doesn't seem weird for a baby or toddler to me. I prefer it to Tommy.

  • I love the name Thomas. I really like Thomas Patrick H_____ (hard to spell and pronounce german last name).  Also I found out I was pregnant on St. Patrick's day and I am due right around Thanksgiving... so I could have a "Tom Turkey!"

All in all, I love the name Thomas!

I love Thomas. It will definitely be LOs middle name if we have a boy, after my grandfather. I am with you though, I do not love the nicknames that come with the name. However, I think you have a lot of control over that - if a family member calls baby Tom or Tommy just polite correct them and only refer to him as Thomas!
