gotta buy 2 new cribs (recs, please) and vent about where I've been...

So, our family survived relocating nearly 700 miles two weeks ago and I've been trying to unpack and be a mom at the same time ever since.

I won't lie, I've moved several times and this was the worst. Due to limited reimbursement funds through DH's job, we had planned well in advance to hire a packing/loading crew and drive the truck ourselves; then have an unloading crew meet us at the new house. We had both crews lined up weeks before moving day. Two days prior to moving day, we found out the packing crew wasn't coming because they couldn't get enough people together (whatever, we only needed 3 guys) so DH frantically called the moving company that referred the crew to us and put us in touch with another crew. We confirmed with the second crew date, time, and even our GPS coordinates to make sure we were all on the same page. To try to make this a short story, moving day comes and they were no-call-no-show and would not answer our phone calls-not even a phone call to lie and say they had a flat tire, ugh!

We made a few May-Day calls and some friends' 16 year old son and nephew were the only ones available to help us. I had packed most of my kitchen in advance to leave the non-breakable stuff for the pros that were supposed to load it all in wardrobe boxes, etc. So we ran out of boxes, tape, paper, you name it. We also ran out of room on the truck and ended up having to leave a lot of things behind, including the babies' changing table, my older kids' bicycles, some antique family furniture that I gave away, our big gas grill, blah blah blah....

DH dismantled the girls' cribs and intentionally packed and duct taped the attachment bolts to the mattress supports so it would be easy to find and one of the first things off the truck that we could reassemble. When the unloaders brought the cribs in, the items he'd securely duct taped in a bright yellow envelope were no where to be found. We've searched everywhere. Those cribs were from my older two kids; they were the drop sides, so I cannot order replacement fasteners. For the past 2 weeks the babies have been sleeping in pack n plays, but they don't sleep well in them and DH and I both have bad backs so the bending over to the floor motion is killing us.

so....recommend your inexpensive cribs, please. Neither color nor convertible matters to me. I just want safety and something less than $150 a piece, if possible.  We still have our mattresses...

Thanks!!!!!!

  • What a horrible experience. I'm sorry the move wasn't better. We got our cribs at Ikea. They have a few options all reasonably priced. We then got the kolcraft mattresses at Walmart for $38.

  • We just moved 1700 miles and had some of the same experiences, moving sucks.

We bought Graco Freemont cribs.  I think there are several in the Graco line that are $130-$160.  The Graco Lauren is a really pretty crib.  Check out Walmart.  GL!

  • When we had our second child we bought a Graco Lauren Convertible crib, and we have been very happy with it. One of my friends also has this crib, she is now using hers with her second child and has also been very happy with it.

  • I have the Graco Lauren cribs - sold at Walmart and Target for about $150.

Recommended by Baby Bargains as 1 of 2 top cribs to buy.

Love mine - easy to put together - holding up well - come in variety of colors and convertible to toddler beds with no extra accessories

  • That's such a bummer!  We have Ikea Sundvik Cribs ($119 each) - there is another one there that is very popular too (called the Singlar I think?) for around $99.  Both of those options turn into toddler beds for down the road.  Good luck!

We also bought these. Haven't officially used them yet, but they were easy to put together and are sturdy and attractive. We found the best deal at Wal-Mart but they also have them on Amazon.

We've been happy with our Graco Lauren Convertible cribs as well.  Bought them online at Walmart...it was a crib/mattress deal for something like $150.  It was cheaper without the mattress but I don't remember how much.  It was VERY easy to put together and has held up well so far.  At the time they had free shipping and they came in record time.  We just saw the same crib at ToysRUs without the mattress for $200.  Sorry your move was such a mess...just be glad it's over!  Good luck.

  • We bought Graco Sarah cribs in espresso from Wal mart for $130 each. The twins are likely are only babies, so we knew it was dumb to spend a lot on cribs...we will just get them each a nice twin bedroom set in a few years. We really like them so far!!

We have these, but in white. Really like them so far! Got a deal at Walmart that came with the changing table too. All around $450 with mattresses.

Love our Ikea Gulliver cribs that were about $100 and convert to toddler beds without additional kits (aka $)!

  • Could you try Craigslist in your new area? I got our cribs online for $40 each. They weren't what I would've chosen brand new, but they match and I'm very happy with them - especially the price!!

  • Can you contact the crib manufacturer and ask if they could send you a stabilization kit? When all of the drop-side recall stuff first came out our manufacturer offered the kits to turn our drop side crib into a stationary sided crib. We just had to fill out a form online. Otherwise, the Graco Lauren's seem like a good choice. Good luck!

  • We ended up going out for ice cream last night when DH got home from work and there is a Super Target across the street from Sonic. We decided to go see what they had on hand and we lucked out. The Graco Somerset was on clearance for $120.

They had 2 espressos and 1 white so we went with espresso. The clerk said it was showing as a clearance item so most likely they weren't going to get anymore. I would have preferred white but I wanted them to match since their old ones were totally mismatched hand me downs.  So if anyone else needs a good inexpensive crib, go check out Target!

    Thanks, again!!
