Ok. So, I'm curious about weight gain during pregnancy. At my first appointment, I was 8 weeks to the day along. At my second appointment (12 weeks), I had gained 5 pounds. My scale at home says I've gained another 3-4. AHH
Background - In the year after we got married, I gained an unholy amount of weight, and went and had my thyroid checked. Bingo, thyroid major meltdown. I'd been on medication for a little over a year, and had FINALLY lost 4 lbs. Then I got KU.
So, I'm considered in the "obese" category for my body height (though, I gotta say, I never felt comfortable at the "appropriate" weight the BMI gives you; I felt my best at +10 lbs of that, which I was when we got married.) My DR hasn't yet told me how much I should/shouldn't be gaining, and so I was wondering if you ladies could give me estimates on how much you gained during your first pregnancy? I've looked up the "textbook" answers, but I was curious if I could hear it from real people. Thank you in advance! ![]()
Re: Weight gain... sorry, I know, ANOTHER post about this....
I am currently at 25 weeks and up 15 pounds. (I am 5'9", and was considered an 'average' BMI) My doctor says this is right on track for me.
I am expecting to put on more weight at the end, though - I haven't had any swelling (hands/feet/face/etc.) so far, but I tend to swell up in heat, and we're recent transplants to Seattle - it is still cold here, we won't hit summer temps until later!

Have you talked to your dr. about the thyroid issues to see if you can stay on the medication? Also for what it's worth....BMI is seriously the worst way to calculate what your target weight should be, so I would throw that right out the window. Give your Dr.'s nurse a call tomorrow and ask. It never hurts, but if she was concerned she would have brought it up.
I am not the norm. However, I believe the healthy total weight gain is usually around 30-40lbs. these days. Most of your weight gain is within in the last few months, so be prepared for that. Ask your OB what they feel your overall weight gain should be and if they feel you are on target. It is hard to compare since everybody's body type is different. You are unique and your weight gain will be different then others, so jusr keep that in mind. By the way, one of my sisters has an overactive thyroid and another has an under active thyroid (one had twins last year and the other is pregnant with twins due in September) so you are not alone when dealing with thyroid issues while pregnant. Best of luck to you!
I am going to guess that most responses to this post (and most on the Bump about weight gain) are going to be from women who gain on the lower side of the average. I gained a pound a week (on average) my entire first pregnancy until the very end when I started to swell a little. I ended up gaining around 50 lbs. and lost 35 lbs. in the first couple weeks (obviously some is baby..haha). I was able to lose the extra weight with exercise and counting calories.
I am gaining at the exact same rate this pregnancy even though I am trying to "do better" with my weight gain. I know it is easy to worry about gaining too much (or too little) but if you are honest with yourself, you will know if you are exercising the right amount and eating the right amount. It is always smart to try to be active and not overeat, but if you gain a little more than you should, you can diet after you have the baby.
Thank you SO much for the responses!! It's really helpful seeing "real" people give "real" answers instead of reading articles on what so-and-so thinks.
Now that I'm not puking my brains out every day (at which time, I ate what sounded good in hopes that I wouldn't get sick rather than what was the *healthy* choice) my DH and I are on a great food/exercise plan of eating better and swimming every other day. I'm considering signing up for a water aerobics class, too. Again, thank you everyone! Keep 'em comin if ya got 'em!
