Nanny??

Hello my bumpie beauties :)

My hubby and I want to hire a nanny for 2 days/wk when I return to work. Problem is, I have NO idea how to interview for this?? I mean, I can't just come out and say "Hi, I just want to make sure you're not going to harm or kill my child." We unfortunately do not have any family out here so I'm not sure how to go about this process and find someone we both completely trust...HELP!

Re: Nanny??

  • Lots of areas have nanny services that prescreen potential applicants and do an intial match before they send the nanny to the family to be interviewed.

  • Regardless of how/who you interview I would tell them (whether its true or not) that you have a "Nanny Cam" installed in your home and if that makes them uncomfortable then your child isn't the child they should be supervising.

  • I was a nanny for almost all of last year. I found an ad on craigslist, and was a little nervous when the woman asked me to meet her at her house for the interview. I looked up the address, found it was in a nice neighborhood (I was very new to the city at that time) and had my DH on speed dial. When I replied to the ad, I gave a letter with a little bit about myself, and what my qualifications were. At the interview, the woman asked me several different things like what my experience was, what my faith was (they are agnostic, so they didn't want a nanny to shove things down their kid's throats) what I would do in certain situations (i.e. brother comes in crying that sister hit him, what would you do?) and so on and so forth. After the interview, she called and asked me to get set up with sittercity or something so she could run a background check, and asked for a few reference phone numbers. About a month later, she had me back and I met the kids, husband, and previous nanny and was there for about an hour. Another month later, she offered me the job. It ended up being a great experience and the kids and I loved one another. I left because the parents were getting weirder and weirder on me and weren't fulfilling their promises of a "raise" and "gas money" (I picked kids up from school, took the daughter to ballet and gymnastics, and the son to gymnastics 30 minutes away.) All in all, great experience.

I totally feel ya, though. I'm weird about giving out my info to strangers/inviting them in. I'd suggest, that if you did find someone via an online site or word-of-mouth, to meet them in public without your child, and get a feel for them. After that, with your SO and child have a meeting at your home, and go from there. Good luck!
