Low Iron Any Suggestions

Well, I had my glucose test Friday & passed. Wahoo!!! But they called today and said that my iron was low and she was going to call in a scrip for me.  I need to take it 3xday with orange juice or vitamin c.  And that I can't eat ice until I deliver (boo, I love eating ice).  Anyone else having to take anything for low iron and if so any suggestions.

Re: Low Iron Any Suggestions

  • My doctor informed me a few weeks ago that I was anemic.  So I am also taking iron supplements.  I must have been given a stronger script because I only have to take one a day.  Also with a glass of juice.  I have just been tryinh to be more conscious of what I am eating.  Trying to eat foods that are higher in iron like beans, red meat, dark green veggies, etc.  I have noticed that the iron pills make me feel sick to my stomach.  Have you been having that at all?

I just got the call, so I haven't even picked up the scrip just yet.  The few things I have read has been about getting sick after taking the meds.  I'm hoping that's not the case since I was lucky enough not to have ms.  Hopefully someone out there will have a few tips.

I found it odd myself.  She said that when I eat ice it doesn't allow my body to absorb iron.  Ice is just water so...??? Something I've never heard.  But she's the one with the degree.  When I get a chance I'll have to google it and find out how that works.

  • According the the Mayo Clinic craving ice is a symptom of anemia. Maybe they want you to avoid it because it has no nutritional value?

I found out I was anemic my first dr app. I was just told to take iron supplement once a day. You can look up food that is high in iron and eat some of that. I've been trying to do that but my levels weren't too low

  • Ice? As in, frozen water. It does melt, right? It's not freezing up the iron absorbing parts of your digestive system? I don't get it.

What I might have expected her to say is not to take the supplement with a gallon of milk, as too much calcium can block iron absorption. But, ice??

If craving ice is a symptom of anemia, OK, but does it follow that having ice causes anemia? .......like you said, she's the one with the degree...... I'm just curious which study she read.
