Level 2 U/S vs A/S

This may be pretty obvious and I'm just not finding the information because my googlefu is weak, but what is the difference between a level 2 u/s and an A/S?  I have an appointment for my level 2 this afternoon and my OB hasn't mentioned word one about an A/S, so I was wondering if she's planning to use the information from the level 2 in place/instead of an anatomy scan?  Is that possible?  I know that not all pregnancies end up having a level 2, but most of the ones on the bump seem to be getting an A/S, and I was just wondering if anyone ended up with both at some point?

Re: Level 2 U/S vs A/S

  • I had an a/s and then was referred for a level II u/s.  I think it depends on what your doctor has available.  In all honesty though, I didn't notice a difference when viewing them.  They were the exact same thing to me.

I would assume that your level II is actually your anatomy scan and that's just what she calls it.

  • I was under the impression that your level 2 at 18-20 weeks is, in fact, the same thing as your A/S. I had a level 2 at 20 weeks with DD, and that was our anatomy scan.

  • A level 2 is generally done to focus on one particular area of the anatomy.  Our daughter had a dilated kidney and they sent us in for several level 2 ultrasounds.
  • A level 2 covers everything in the A/S, plus more. Due to my AMA, I was referred straight to a Level 2, skipped past the regular A/S. In your appt today they will do everything they would have done in the A/S, plus do extra measurements and look at things more closely. GL to you!

ETA: It is possible to have an A/S and for them to find something they are concerned about and at that point they will send you for a Level 2 to check things out more closely.

  • my OB has everyone do a level 2. It wasn't a big deal at all- basically the same thing as the first one- looking at organs, etc.

Thank you.  It looks like we might be skipping past the regular A/S as well.  Our regular hospital routinely sends people to radiology for an A/S, but I'm being sent off site for the Level 2.

They use the terms interchangably at the MFM office I get all my u/s's done at. They use a "level 2 u/s" to do the a/s.

  • I had my level ll u/s around 18 weeks at the hospital I'll deliver at and I only had a level ll because I am AMA.  I then had my anatomy scan at my OB's office at 20 weeks.  Not quite sure what the difference is, but I think it's a longer, more in depth u/s that looks for markers for DS as well as other abnormalities.

Yep, my A/S was a Level 2 u/s.  I think they're the same thing, just with a "technical name" and a "common name."

You won't miss anything. Your level 2 will cover everything the A/S does, plus  more. It's fun, because you get to see your LO for awhile on the screen while they get the measurements. We got some GREAT pictures out of it. She gave us a thumbs up right after the tech told us it was a girl, and she got a great picture of it!!

  • a Level 2 u/s is a more in-depth ultrasound than just a regular a/s.  Some OB office does their own a/s, and if someone looks suspicious, they'll send you to get a Level 2.

At my OB, they send me to the MFM dept where I automatically get a Level 2 as my "a/s".  At the ultrasound, the tech first does the views and measurements, then the MFM doctor comes in and reviews the pictures and she takes another look with the u/s machine.  I get the results immediately from the MFM doctor.
