Arching away from breast and refusing to latch?

DD has recently developed a habit of arching back/pushing away from the breast and refusing to latch even as she's crying because she's hungry. She barely lets me put the nipple in her mouth, and when I do she doesn't even try to close her mouth around it and continues to wiggle and arch away from it. I've even tried to express some milk into her mouth, but neither that nor holding her in any particular position vs. another seems to make a difference (and yes, I'm sure that she actually is wanting to nurse while this is happening). This will go on for a few minutes before she finally latches. Unfortunately she's currently in the midst of a raging growth spurt and wants to eat CONSTANTLY, so this new habit is not making things any easier :( Any thoughts about what this is/advice? I'm really frustrated...

Re: Arching away from breast and refusing to latch?

  • It could be reflux. This is about the time it hits and this is a symptom. I'm starting to wonder whether my 3 week old has it but this is not something we've dealt with.

My first daughter did the same thing and it turned out to be reflux. But ours was more latching initially but then unlatching/relatching repeatedly before finally refusing to latch at all.

  • Back arching can be a sign of reflux, like pp said. I'd talk to the pedi. In the meantime, burp her really well and keep her upright for 20 min after feedings.

  • For me, this was a sign of LO's MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerance).  BUT, this wasn't the only sign.  The main sign was mucosy, green poop.
  • Thanks ladies! I'll ask. She doesn't seem to exhibit any other reflux symptoms, though. Her poop is normal too.

  • DS was doing this and our LC felt it was reflux. He is now on Pepcid. I'd encourage you to address it as soon as possible because it really escalated to a bad place for us and resulted in a nursing strike. We're past that but nursing is still really dicey and I don't feel like the reflux is resolved either :(.

This was the only symptom that DD had.  They dx her with Silent Reflux.  Zantac made her a completely different baby.  For sure press your Pedi about it.  I asked early on, they sent me to a LC, she would eat really well in front of her, so she said it was probably gas.  Gripe water and gas drops did nothing.  She would cry during 90% of her feedings.  It got really really bad at about 4.5m and I made another Pedi appt and said we needed to figure out what was wrong.  They said Zantac wouldn't hurt if that was what it was.  Sure enough after her 1st dose, she already was eating so much better.  She is just now able to not be on her Zantac.

  • We are dealing with that too. She is on meds for reflux but this is still continuing so I am now getting ready to eliminate dairy and see if that  helps.

  • I was coming on to ask the same question...I was hoping it wasn't reflux. We don't see the pedi until next week- anyone have ideas of what I can do to make him more comfortable until then?

  • My DD did this for a while and she did not have reflux. What worked for us was to try to get her to latch while I was walkinf around.
  • Could definitely be reflux, my LO was doing the exact same thing and the doctor suspected reflux and put him on Zantac... but it turned out that his reflux and gas were a symptom of his food intolerances.  He cannot handle dairy or soy proteins, so I had to eliminate them from my diet.  I would talk to your doctor and consider that reflux and/or food intolerances may be happening. Common CMA Symptoms Video:https://bit.ly/sYdNi5.

Hope your LO feels better soon!
