Cloth Diapering

Newborn Covers?? Opinions please!

I currently have the following covers to try with baby #1 :

- 1 lil joey (newborn)

- bummis super brites (1 x-small, 1 small)

- 1 swaddlebees capri (size 1)

- 1 grovia (OS)

- 2 thirsties (x-small)

- 1 thirsties duo wrap (size 1)

- 1 rumparooz (OS)

- 1 flip

- 1 BG 4.0 (may use as a pocket or a cover when it fits...)

Here's my question... when I make all of these diapers as small as they get, there are only 3 that look like they would actually have a chance of fitting a newborn baby (the swaddlebees capri, lil joey, and super brite xsmall).  I really don't want to supplement with sposies, and I'm thinking I should have at least 5 or 6 for the newborn period...

Should I get a second diaper each of the 3 smallest covers that I listed above?  Or are there some others that any of you have used with newborns that fit right away that I should give a try?  Thanks!

Re: Newborn Covers?? Opinions please!

  • Depends on the size of your baby... my LO was 5 lbs when she came home, so my two newborn superbrites were the only ones to fit her... but she fit into the Thirsties XS by 6 lbs roughly, and the thirsties size 1, and bummis size small by a little less than 7 lbs.  They are bulky between her legs and it looks a little funny, but they work now.

I managed with the two newborn bummis because I knew that she would grow quickly and be able to fit into the other diapers by the time more were shipped.  I did wash everyday  but it was only for about 2 weeks.  I used sposies while the covers were in the wash.  Since most babies are bigger than my LO, you should be safe... if you wanted to, you could get another diaper or two to be sure...

  • Your OS covers won't fit a NB.

  • My 7lb 5oz baby did not fit into anything. I made the thirsties xsmall work. His  grovia newborn aios fit on the smallest setting. The lil joeys aios do fit. The bummis I only had a small, and it is still nowhere near fitting him and he's a month old now. I got some wahm ones on etsy that worked quite well from Michelle Zook. I don't remember the name of her store.
  • I'd get a couple Proraps. They're cheap & fit well.

DD was 8lbs when we started CDing at 2 weeks old. She's a skinny, but the thirsties xs and bummis fit her pretty well to start. Our thirsties duo fit like a week later, and are her best fits still I think. She was only up to 8lb 7oz by her 1 month and was still good. It depends on the shape and size of your LO

  • DD weighed 8#1, and size 1 Thirsties DuoWrap fit her just fine when she came home from the hospital. But then again, OS BG 4.0 and econobum covers worked for us from the beginning too. They were super bulky, but they stayed on and didn't leak.

  • We liked Bummis Super Brites okay for the NB stage, but our absolute favourites were Thirsties XS.  DD started wearing them at birth (7 pounds 9 ounces).

Your OS covers won't fit a newborn, and some of the diapers you listed are pockets.  I wouldn't use a pocket diaper as a cover...

Actually, the only one of these covers that has a pocket inside of it is the BG 4.0 - and I figured that a lot of people talk about it and seem to like it, so it would be a good "trial" pocket diaper to see if we want to go in that direction.

Seems like a few people were good with the Thirsties XS right after birth, so maybe I'll be able to make those work too!

  • DS weighed 5# when he came home and we survived with a bummis and 3 rumparoos. The RRs still fit, edging in on 10# and all the size 1s fit at about 8# (maybe sooner, I didnt try real early bc we had the NB sizes). The NB bummis is probably only going to work another week, if that. We also have 3 NB grovias that still fit and were good at the beginning too. HTH!
