2nd Trimester

Soooo found out I am losing my job :/

my boss called me into his office this week to tell me he decided to no longer practice law and will be closing his office by the end of the year. I am in such shock. I have been at this job for 10 years since I finished school. I am just so stressed over having child number two with no job to go back to. I found out on Tuesday but haven't told DH yet. He's been stressed lately and lost his dad about a month ago.....I am afraid it's really going to stress him. I have to tell him obviously but can't bring myself to yet. We have savings we've been socking away for my alternate leave and I have. a disability policy I can cash in when baby is born and I will be able to collect unemployment once I eave work late fall, so it wont be that bad right? I'm just running by you guys how I will paint it positive to DH :/

  • I would tell him soon, yes it will stress him, but he will probably get pretty p/o if he finds out you've known for a while... Just my two cents..

When you do tell him, keep telling him that at least you have time to prepare, it's not like this is going to happen next week. Make a plan together, so his (and probably your) stress levels can go down a little.

This is a terrible thing to happen right now, I am sorry. Just try to stay calm, you have time to plan.

  • Maybe you can talk to your boss about putting in a good word for you with another law office? I'm sure he knows people and might be able to help you.

  • He said he felt horrible about the timing and would give me great recommendations and whatever I need. It just stinks I can't really start looking now you know? I am 21 weeks pregnant and majorly showing. I can work until DS is born so there's really no need to look now anyway I guess. I just don't like not being in control. DH worked yesterday and today 16 hours each til 11pm so I doubt he'd want to hear it now and then tomorrow is fathers day......
  • I lost my job exactly one week after I found out I was pregnant, it ended up being a total blessing in disguise! My unemployment isn't much less than what I was actually bringing home after the cost of child care and gas, and since I was there for 5 years I am able to collect unemployment for two years. By then my son will be in school and I will only have to worry about child care for one. If I still had a job, I would be looking at paying anywhere from $1200-$1600 a month in childcare, just to continue to work. If you look at it that way, its far less stressful!

  • Thanks! I guess maybe it is better than just living off my savings I can collect and keep the savings and start out ahead when I find something else. Good luck to you when/if you start looking!
  • I am really sorry to hear this, The good thing is you have time to look for another job and you aren't just going to be left high and dry. I really hope things work out for you. Best of luck!

  • Good luck to you. As pp said, it can have some positive benefits.  You can collect and have more time with your children than traditional leave would allow, which will save you money on childcare. I hope the conversation with Dh goes well and you can let him kows some p,and have changed.  Sounds like you have a good foundation with saving, unemployment, and insurance.  Again, good luck!

  • Depending on what you do, could you start looking for a new job now?  If you find a good opportunity, let them know that you are clearly expecting a baby, and are looking to start in Feb/March at FT/PT etc.  I know both where I work and where DH is, we're always looking for good people, so while it would be unconventional, it wouldn't be out of the question to hire someone to start in 6-9 months.

This! I am an attorney. It's a pretty small community and we all know each other. We see the same lawyers day in and day out. Ask him to check with other lawyers he knows and put in a good word about you if any of them are hiring.  Good luck.

  • I would ask him to get together a letter of recommendation just in case you lose touch after your LO is born.  That way you already have something you can attach to your resume when you are ready to start looking again.
