Interesting Article about toes - LIP

https://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/14/12227285-hidden-hairs-can-strangle-babys-tiny-toes-doc-warns?lite

My boss just sent me this since she knows I am FTM.  Also she said when she was little they had put her in a footed sleeper and couldn't figure out why she wouldn't stop crying.   The next day her parents got her up and her little toe was black because a peice of elastic had wrapped around it.   She said she didn't lose her toe but it is a wierd shape from the rest.    I would have never thought a single hair could do this and the possibility of it happening is pretty low per the article but just interesting . . . I am a nerd I know.  Plus I would have never even thought of this and I am forever shedding like an animal!

  • Yes, this is so crazy! It happened to my little sister when she was a baby, a long hair was wrapped around one of her teeny toes. It became so swollen and took a long time to get the hair off! Just another thing for us to keep in mind and be paranoid about!! :D

  • Without reading responses, it's easy to "solve" this issue if you wash/dry the sleepers inside out. But always check every diaper change, your baby's toes.

  • In the pediatrician's office where I did my peds rotation, we used Nair to remove these.  Though of course, if the toe is blue or discolored, you should still bring the baby in to be seen!

Mine either . . . I had to check the source just to make sure I wasn't reading a Huffington post article or something.  I am glad I at least know now.

Also, the comment about washing them inside out is helpful too!   Thanks,

  • Wow, this is the last think I would have ever thought to worry about! I have extremely short hair (less than an inch usually) but DH's is very long. I am going to be absolutely meticulous about turning sleepers inside out when I wash them.

  • I think I read about this in the back of my What to Expect book. Like a checklist of things to check if baby won't stop crying.

My mother actually found one of her hairs wrapped around my brother's penis when he was a few months old. It wasn't there long enough to hurt him, but it scared her.

I am now terrified. I have long, very thick hair. Like I'm convinced my kid is going to come out looking like a super hairy wookie.  I shed like a freakin cat, and my damn hair gets on everything.

Glad you posted this, so now I know to constantly be on the look out!!
