This is a resonable concern right?

MH lets Nikolai hold random objects from his desk sometimes when he's watching him.  Most are totally fine but sometimes he lets him hold a screwdriver.  This seems inherently unsafe to me!

We were putting together a scooter for N this afternoon and needed the screwdriver for it.  MH let N hold the screwdriver while wandering around the living room until he needed it.  And then when he tried to take it from N, N started bawling so MH gave it back to him.  Said he didn't want to be the one to make him cry.  And that a screwdriver is no more dangerous than other things N holds, like wooden spoons and sticks (these sticks are the hollow stems from last year's flowers in the front lawn - they crush into fragments at the slightest pressure).

Am I the crazy one here?

  • Yep. Dangerous.

  • First, I would say that I wouldn't mind letting my child hold the screwdriver while sitting in my lap (or DH's lap), but not while walking around. Nothing good will come of that. And it's quite different from a wooden spoon or "sticks."

Second, I probably wouldn't let him hold the screwdriver just because he wouldn't understand holding it while sitting in someone's lap vs. holding it and walking around. Also, even in my lap it would quickly become a hitting tool.

Third, and more importantly, your DH needs to get over "being the one to make him cry." Like, now. Otherwise, you're going to be stuck with a very spoiled kid - who knows he can always get what he wants from his dad. And what is he going to do when he wants to hold the butcher knife?

Yes, thank you!!  I agree 100%.  And he claims he will be a hardass when necessary.  Please.  We'll be having a nice long talk about what is appropriate for a 1 year old later tonight.

  • You should probably wrap the kid in bubble wrap and cover the house in Nerf foam, just to be safe.
  • Welcome to a day in the life at my house.  My son wants NOTHING to do with toys.  Only dangerous household wares.  Great.

    PARENTING SEEMS SO HAAARD.

No, really, it's mostly like having a dog.

Except you can't just take them outside to poop.

  • Meh - I do and have. I've also let my kid play with real nails. OMG! DH has a woodworking business, so LO has been in the shop a number of times. She plays with his real tools (the non-electric ones) and as long as she's supervised I don't have a problem with her. It's not like she's running around the room with a screwdriver - she's walking from one place to another. I don't see the big deal. If she was walking with it shoved up her nose - yes, big deal.

i read recently on another mom board about a similar situation.  it didn't make the news, but this one did.  maybe for showing to your DH?

You keep telling me that parenting is like having a dog, but whenever I say that to my friends who are parents I get this look

     image

Okay. It's really like having a dog that you have to keep with you AT ALL TIMES, but is too big and heavy to fit in your purse and doesn't have any legs so you have to carry it, and in fact requires a purse of its own due to all the fooking accessories, and also maybe has some food sensitivities, but is really good at begging food off strangers when you're not looking, so you pretty much can't sleep at night because every sound makes you think your lazy, non-walking, food-mooching dog might be puking or having diarrhea on your brand new rug.

So, yeah, pretty much just like having a dog. An untrainable dog.

  • I'll one up you: FIL let DD play with a drill. Showed her how to press the button. While it was pointed at her face. Didn't see a problem with it. DH didn't either.

Eh, it's seasonal.  Nathaniel had a pretty bad diaper rash, so we were doing lots of naked airing out time in the back yard.

I don't let my son use a screw driver. But that is mostly because MIL told me a story about BIL falling and stabbing himself w/ a screwdriver & having to go to the hospital.

  • I know I'm late to this, but, is he serious?  N is a new walker and I'm betting he still falls down quite a bit, right?  I know C does and he's been walking for a couple of months.  He also frequently jams the crap he's walking with into his face when he falls.  So, no, a screwdriver is not acceptable.

Maybe get N one of these sets:  https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Toolbox-Fill-Spill/dp/B000U4CUHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1339809813&sr=1-1&keywords=soft+tool+kit

C has one and loves it.

Yu-huh!  He falls all the damn time!  So yeah, not acceptable.  Aiyayayayaya!  On the other hand, I was looking for something to add to my Amazon cart to get super saver shipping.  I think I just found that something.

The little drill has a pull cord thing that makes it vibrate.  He's going to love it.
