2nd Trimester

Micro Management

I'm feeling a bit micro managed by my OB. She was polite in the conversation but had the weight talk. I'm 4-6 lbs over from where I'm suppose to be at 25 weeks, but still shy of the total weight I'm "allowed" to put on. I naturally, cried. This pregnancy as not been easy and allowing myself to get fatter without body image issues is hard enough. I'm not going to even talk about all the aches, pains, and nausea that have decreased my amount of exercise to just walking (from being a runner). I can see my OB's side- she has to warn me- but really???!!! This is hard work and I'm not being ridiculous with my diet. I even saw a nutritionist to confirm it. Now I'm totally concerned with my body which sucks, because I wasn't before. I had put away the scale and let my belly hang out there with pride. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Re: Micro Management

  • Is this the first time you have felt micromanaged by your OB? Remember your OB follows guidelines in your best interest, and she is informing you based on her experiences and medical expertise. Did you talk to the nutritionist before or after you had this talk with your OB? I gained 4 lbs too much this past month and my doctor told me it was a bit much, but also said that some women gain weight in peaks and valleys. She also told me the only thing gaining too much will do is to make it harder to lose it afterward.

If you feel like you are doing as much as you can, and your nutritionist feels like you are ok, then let yourself relax a little bit. Remember that during pregnancy many things seem worse than they really are. Your body is changing, you may feel self conscious about it, but this isn't changing your personality and who you are inside. I can't tell you how many people have told me how beautiful they think a pregnant woman is. I'm sure people you are around feel the same way, even though they may not vocalize it. Go do something you find relaxing and you may find yourself worrying about it less. Good luck!

  • I think that you are well within the bounds of weight gain at this point. As PP said, many women gain weight in peaks and valleys. You seem to be very aware of your diet and are trying to make healthy choices which is best for you and your baby, unlike me, who ate ice cream daily just because I could.

All that being said, personally, though it is hard to hear from a doctor that you are gaining too much weight, it really is in your best interest for them to advise you on your weight gain. My OB said very little about my weight gain with DD, and I ended up gaining a total of 60 pounds! It was incredibly difficult for me to lose, and I still had an extra 15 pounds of baby weight from baby #1 when I got pregnant with #2! With DS I gained the recommended 35 pounds but had to join Weight Watchers because I just could not get the weight off.

Good luck and try not to let it get you down. It sounds like you are doing everything right!
