I need parenting help

DD is starting to potty train at daycare and is doing very well because obviously my child is a genius. Do i need to worry with Pull ups? Or can she go straight from dipes to regular undies?

Re: I need parenting help

  • We plan to transition straight to underwear (we do have the gerber training underwear which has a bunch of material in the wet zone so it helps reduce messes).

A lot of people find that pull ups to their kids are just bigger diapers and the kids use them as such.

Pull ups are a waste of money.

Thats what I hear but I have zero clue as to how this all goes.

  • Skip the pull ups.  They are still diapers.  Daycare will usually tell you just to bring in plenty of underwear and changes of clothes.

  • Personally I think Pull-Ups are DUMB and a waste.  IMO part of potty training is your kid feeling what it is like to have an "accident" and being that a pull-up offers the same protection as a diaper to me it defeats that purpose.

  • The only thing pull ups are good for IMO is when your child is day trained early way before being night trained and they throw a fit over wearing a "baby diaper." Yeah, they are basically the same except one doesn't provoke a tantrum at bedtime.

  • That's great that she's doing so well! I would just test out going staight from diapers to underwear. If it gets annoying and she is having accidents often you can always go buy some pull-ups. FWIW we used pull-ups with DS1 and it worked just fine. He was potty trained (even at night) by 2 and a half.

I CD with ds2 so I'll probably never buy pull-ups for him.

I can agree with this. But in general, I think pull ups are stupid. They just make training take longer because your kid is still wearing a diaper.

I agree with this although I do use them for naps and night time.

  • When I worked in preschools it was just as hard to change a kid in pull ups as it was to change underwear- you still have to pull everything off and on and change clothes if needed.  I agree with the point of wearing underwear and having the child feel the feeling of the mess, not the diaper. But I have no experience at home yet!

We used pull ups for a little while, it didn't do any help with training.

She finally learned after we switched her to only wearing underwear. She had tons of accidents at first, but after a few weeks she started getting the idea. Now her biggest issue is being too distracted with what she is doing to realize she needs to go until it is too late. Some days are better than others, but overall it is much better than when we first started.

Same here. I just had to remind her constantly until she got the hang of it. I've heard rumors that letting kids pick out their own undies helps with the training but my LO didn't give a sh!t. No pun intended.
