Eco-Friendly Family

starting out with cloth pads

Since we use CDs and wipes, I figure why not?  I hate the itchiness of disposable pads anyway.  Unlike CDs, I have no one in my family to ask for advice.  So I am coming here!

1.  What kind do you recommend?  I can't spend a fortune.  I have an average to semi-heavy flow the first 2 days, then a pretty light flow the last 3.  I know I want a waterPROOF backing.  I would prefer something thinner, I hate the feeling of a diaper.  I found good price for a set on Etsy from ecoAlternatives and Trojacek Farms, but don't know about the quality.

2.  How many do I need?

Re: starting out with cloth pads

  • I made my own from the eco friendy family blog.  I did make my pattern a bit bigger.  I used fleece for the bottom waterproof layer and two layers of flannel with one layer of cotton knit in between.  They are way more comfortable and much cooler than disposables and were fairly easy and cheap to make. The absorbancy is fine and the fleece has worked well as a waterproof backing. If you have a lighter flow you could just use two layers of flannel and the fleece.  I don't feel like they are really thick or uncomfortable.  I usually forget that I have them on.

My sewing machine was broken so I did them by hand and did not turn the edges under so that it would not be so thick.  This has caused the top layer to unravel past the seam so next time I will turn only the top layer under to prevent fraying.  Also, I don't have a snap press.  I just used sew on snaps from Hancock.

I think I made 10.  Two overnight and 8 regular.  I have never run out and I wash every other day with cloth diapers.

  • Clothsolutions on Etsy makes good priced GREAT quality flannel cotton and PUL ones. I purchased one of the 6 pack kits and that is enough for me to wash only twice a cycle. Never had a leak and so much more comfortable than disposable.

  • Party In My Pants has a cloth-pad curious giveaway where you order the kind you want and pay 3.99 shipping and handling. I wasn't too sure about using CP but I bought one from there and I love it! I've also heard of one creator on Etsy, I'm not sure of the exact spelling but they are called PinkLemonade I believe. She has some good things too!

  • Right now I have a few from different makers. But my favorites are Little Seedlings on Hyena Cart. She is a friend of mine and promised me she would stock some more as soon as she can. They are made with a fleece backing and minky top, which I found doesn't stain.

Also I am planning to make some of my own to try out.

  • Sorry if this is something you're not interested in, but have you heard of reusable silicone cups? I like the Diva Cup and have used it for many years. You can wear it for 12 hours on lighter flow days, so you don't have to mess with anything while you're out (change it in the morning before you leave and when you get home). On heavier flow days I did have to dump it out in the toilet once or twice. I have an IUD now so I basically have no period. One big plus is you can use it when you're expecting your period. I would put it in in the morning if I thought I might start that day, and it's no biggie if you don't (as opposed to tampons).
