2nd Trimester

A/S tomorrow. Questions?

I went to my Dr. a few weeks ago and she never mentioned anything specific to do before my a/s tomorrow. I've done research and heard:

-drink lots of water

-don't drink lots of water

-have some caffeine to get the baby moving

-but not too much caffeine!

Any advice is greatly appreciated.  :)

  • I was only told to drink water for my NT scan. I was never told anything about caffeine!

  • I heard to drink something with caffeine or sugar to get the baby moving a bit.

  • I would call your doctor's office and ask them what you need to do to prepare. I have to drink 16 oz of water, one hour prior.

My dr's office told me exactly this, and said to make sure I only drink 16 oz. of water.  They said overfilling my bladder will actually make things more complicated.  I have heard the caffeine thing, but not from my dr.

  • I've heard of some sugar before hand, like OJ but I just went for my a/s today and they said I didn't need to have a full bladder. Each Office is different though, so I would ask your Dr's office :)

  • Why not just call and ask?

I wasn't certain what I needed to do for my confirmation U/S (haven't made it to the A/S yet), so I just called and asked about water vs no water, etc. They were happy to answer my questions.

I have heard that too much caffeine/sugar can make the baby move too much, so the techs have trouble getting the correct measurements.

  • I was just supposed to drink one liter of water an hour before going to the u/s and no empting your bladder.

That's it, I've never heard anything about caffeine, I'd just stick to the water.

  • Just called the Doctor's office and she told me not to worry about it and I don't need to do anything to prep. Thanks for the advice :)

  • I personally wouldn't drink water before hand. The baby's big enough now for them to see what they need to without you having your bladder full. The a/s can take as long as an hour and you'd be miserable laying there that long with someone pushing on your tummy when you feel like you're about to burst!

  • I had to drink 32 oz of water! WTH?! I didn't even enjoy the appt because I was in pain I had to pee so badly! I actually had to stop halfway to use the bathroom after the tech got the measurements he needed with my full bladder. I would drink 16 oz MAX. I don't even know if it's all that important since I have heard some doctors say that it's not necessary. If your'e going to drink anything--drink a little OJ, but that's not important either. Just go and enjoy!! :)

  • I set my appointment up yesterday.  The doctor handed me a sheet of paper that said to come with a full bladder, and drinking 24 oz of water before hand.

  • I'd call the office or hospital you are having the us at... I did NOT have to have a full bladder.  If I had the half hour would have been unbearable.

  • Oh man! I am jealous of all of you who were told to drink 16 oz of water.  My doc said drink 6-8 glasses before mine. I got maybe 32 oz down and I just couldn't anymore because it was soooooo uncomfortable first thing in the morning. We definitely saw a little boy though!

  • That's so funny how each practice is different...when I went in for my A/S the first words out of the nurse's mouth were, "Do you want to use the bathroom one more time before you go in?"

  • I was told to drink 32 oz of liquid at least 45 mins before the appointment. And do not pee before. Our Dr has a huge water feature in to lobby and it will be HORRIBLE waiting and not being able to pee. Whoever thought a water feature would be nice in a OB's office did not think through how all the preg ladies would feel lol
  • my a/s is tomorrow as well, i called this morning to see if there were any special instructions. there were none, as this is just to measure and see the gender. i drink alot of water through out the day and my apt isn't until 3 so i won't have a full bladder but i will be sure to continue drinking and empty my bladder at the office.
