My self-indulgent baby purchase

Today I got myself a little 1.8 cu. ft. mini fridge for my bedroom.

I know I'm going to be formula feeding this baby and he will be sleeping in our bedroom at night until he STTN because our bedroom is upstairs and his bedroom is downstairs, so I figured it would be nice to have a mini fridge so I could store a night's worth of bottles and some cold drinks for myself. :)

When my DD was little, I just mixed up each bottle as she needed it, but in the middle of the night I'm not sure I was always the most accurate at mixing things up. I also remember one night pouring a full serving of freshly mixed formula into her Playtex drop-ins bottle...without remembering to put the drop-in in first. Screaming baby + formula all over the bathroom floor = bad.

I know my DH rolled his eyes when I told him I was going to buy a mini fridge if I found a good sale on one, but I don't care. I'm the one getting up in the middle of the night feeding this kid!

Re: My self-indulgent baby purchase

  • Good idea!

But I will say that we also make bottles ahead of time, two days worth at a time, and our kids prefer them warmed up (not hot, just warm), so even if I had a fridge in my room, I'd have to warm it up somehow (using bathroom or kitchen hot water in a mug around it to warm it up).

ETA: We have ready to feed formula, so once a can is opened it must be used or refrigerated. Since a newborn doesn't drink 8 oz at once, I have to make about 3-4 bottles per can, and 2-3 of those (the unused ones) go in the fridge until they are used, and are warmed up when they are to be used.

  • I put water into bottles before bed and formula into those formula dispensers (the ones with the three compartments and you twist the lid). That made it so easy at night. DS never would do a cold bottle.

  • My DD had no problem drinking her formula cold. I'm hopeful that this next baby will do the same. But even if he doesn't, at least I can have cold drinks! :)

  • My wife really, really wants a mini fridge in our Master before our baby boy gets here in September...looks like I might have found an early push present. :-)

    Thanks!

  • We inherited my mothers mini fridge when she switched jobs when our DD was 9 months old. I could have kicked myself for not thinking of it sooner. It was AMAZING to just roll out of bed, grab a bottle and walk into her room.

This is what I did too.  And plan to do this time as well.

  • If you end up needing to warm it, maybe go for another splurge item and get a Keurig in your room. We got ours half to warm bottles and half for the coffee aspect.

  • perhaps that is for the best! since my pregnancy ive been probing my mom and dad for anecdotes they have about us as newborns (there are 6 children in my family), and one was about my dad grabbing a bottle of chocolate milk that belonged to my 3 year old sister at the time, and feeding that instead of formula to my 3-day-old brother!!

I am thinking about doing this too. Even mentioned it to DH a few weeks ago to plant the seed that it might happen.  When DS was a baby, we lived in a one story and it wasn't a big deal to make the bottle in the kitchen. Now all the bedrooms are upstairs, with baby gates to hurdle in the middle of the night.

We used RTF with DS after I stopped BFing. He wasn't picky and would drink it room temp or cold.
