I'd imagine that depends on the state. Here, the lawyer is your right, but you don't need one. In fact, it's just a waste of money, because the state throws the max at the NCP unless you have an alt agreement.
My divorce will be final in the next month or 2 and I never had lawyer.
Our courts have family services and while I had to be in line at 6am and wait a couple hours it was all free. And I know I can go back whenever I need to. It was a great resource since Im broke.
