Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Don't use ceiling fan around baby! Whaaa???

Okay... so my mom insists it's bad to use a ceiling fan near baby at all times - saying it can cause pneumonia.

I think she's nuts but has anyone else heard this. Oh & she insists i use a humidifier... Um. I live in FL, one of the most humid states - so what's the point in wasting money?

  • I have read many places that it is recommended to run a fan in baby's room because it is believed to reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • Oh & she also advised me to feed baby water or sugar water. That they need it, which doesn't sound right. i asked her why she thinks this & where is she gettting the water thing from - which she explained while my brother & I were in the hospital we were given sugar water. ??? I'm fairly certain all DD needs is breastmilk until a few months from now. ???

    This.

And the water/sugar water advice is bad too. Your baby defiantly does not need it. I would cease taking any baby advice from your moher in law ASAP.

  • Hahahaha! My mother comes out with some crazy stuff sometimes too.  All of that is nonsense.

I love when they pull out the "well that's what I did with you", or "you survived just fine". Um, yeah 30 years ago that may have been just fine, but science and medicine has come a long way in that time. I love my mother, but sometimes I would like to *** some sense into her.

Silly OWT - I guess they never cease... Things have definitely come a looong way since the 80's - the water thing is what boggles my mind, that a hospital actually did that. And she's always been weird about ceiling fans o.O -hahaha thought fellow bumps would get a kick out of it but then half wondered if there was any truth behind it

This.  Our Pedi told us to run a fan in whatever room she is in b/c studies show that it can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide around a babies face and to keep fresh air moving.  It is hot here so it is a plus.

My MIL keeps telling me to put DD on her tummy instead of her back b/c she did that with DH and he turned out fine.  I really wanted to say well your Dr told you to do that and you listened so now my Dr is telling me the back is best so I am listening to her.  But instead I bite my tongue.

This. Also, hospitals do give sugar water, but usually bc mom's milk hasn't come in yet and they're fussy. And you don't need a humidifier if you live in FL.

They used to give all babies sugar water right after birth to help stabilize their blood sugar.  we now know that is not necessary.  they also used to give babies water in between formula feeds occassionally when it was very hot. which is also unnecessary.

Funny my MIL is visiting and just asked if we were giving DD2 water at 6 weeks. I said nope! Must be a generational thing.

Yeah your mom is nuts :)  Viruses or bacteria cause pneumonia - not breeze.  I think this falls into the category of people who think going out with wet hair can give you a cold - it can't.

This. I live in South Florida.  We have ceiling fans in nearly every room of our house. No pneumonia here.

  • They actually did give DS a little sugar water in the hospital before he got his shots and before he got circumcised. I thought it was weird...maybe it helps with the pain??

My MIL asked about the same thing.  She asked when we could start giving LO water.  I didn't know why I would want to give her water, the pedi said we would talk about how, what, and when to introduce solids at her 6th month check-up.

When DS was in the NICU, they had a infant CPR class for the parents.  And one of the things they told us was best for SIDS was running the ceiling fan.  And they also told us that infants should not have any kind of water.... under the age of 1 yrs old.  How things have changed since we were babies!

Funny, my MIL was a NiCU nurse and insisted DD needed water today bc it was so hot it...this was right after she told me DD should have some formula to hold her over longer. DD is only up 1x per night and eats every 2-3hrs during the day, I'm sure my body is working just fine meeting her needs. Oh, and no water until pedi says yes & how much.

  • There is some evidence sugar water does help with the pain...I just read a study on this the other day.
  • They gave DD some sugar water shortly after her birth, because her glucose levels were really low (low birth weight).  They did it once, and one feeding of formula to stabilize her sugar.  Her sugar levels were fine the next day, so it has been only breast since then.

  • Giving a newborn/infant water is dangerous. It can cause water toxicity. It waters down their blood and in severe cases can cause death. I do not suggest you give your baby water!

  • You are not aupposed ro give babys sugar water they give it to them when they are getting circumcised to help with there nerves and calm them down after the procedure is what my pediatrician told me
  • vterpvterp member

My mother keeps asking about water too.  Her reasoning is that it will "fill her up".  I never asked the pedi about it...but I told her I did and he that he said "no" so she's dropped it now.

Why'd you bump a two year old thread? I don't think your advice is all that useful in an old post.

OMG my grandmother just told me the same thing the other day. I told her she was insane.
