Question about measuring "ahead" for those that are or did with first baby

So I have been measuring 1 week ahead my entire pregnancy (but they wont change my due date). Now at my 30 week appt I am measuring 32cm--so 2 weeks ahead. Should I be panicking about a 12lb kid? Or does this not correlate that much? I am actually BELOW normal on weight gain, so it's not just fatty weight gain, it's the actual uterus/baby getting bigger. Thoughts? Experiences?

I wouldn't worry too much about measuring 2 weeks ahead, and doubt your baby will weigh 12 lbs. If it was 6 weeks ahead, yeah, would probably worry.

  • These things are so hard to actually gauge as it's hard to be completely accurate. If your DR isn't freaking out about a 12 lbs baby, you shouldn't be! :)

At my 29 week appointment baby was measuring 3 lbs 2 ounces and I was measuring 2 weeks ahead...whatever that means. I'm 5'9 and have gained 19 lbs. The DR did note that it seemed like I would have a 'bigger' baby but not as big as my son was (9 lbs, 23 inches). We'll see. Again, I feel it's all a guessing game.

  • I have noticed times when LO was having a growth spurt (as I was hungrier, and my bump grew dramatically), and although I am a FTM, I have measured a solid 2-2.5 weeks ahead on a few occasions. My doctor said this is nothing to be concerned about, as LO looks great and healthy-it just shows he is growing-which is good! My due date has not been changed either as he will come when he is ready. As for size, I did ask if it means he will be super big (although I am having a c-sec so it doesnt entirely concern me) and she said not necessarily. His weight is in the 65th percentile which is good (anything above 50% shows growth and a healthy baby).

  • My fundal height is 7w ahead and LO measures 3w ahead. No due date change because he measured right along for the first half. He measured 4 lbs at the u/s I had at 29w, buti choose to not believe that

  • Fundal measurements and later u/s's are often inaccurate in determining baby's gestational age.  7-12w is the best time to determine the growth of the baby.  I measured a week ahead at each of my early appts so they did change the date (which made sense because I was testing ovulation and it was 5 days earlier in my cycle).  Since that point, she's measured exactly where she was supposed to be at each appt.  I can see your concern as you don't want the baby to get too big.  I would just share your concerns with your OB and maybe they can do a late u/s at 38 or 39w just to make sure the baby isn't too big.

  • I have consistently measured ahead. Anywhere from 2.5-4 weeks ahead. I also have not gained a ton of weight (12 lbs). So they did a growth U/S last Friday and he is in the 53rd percentile (which is almost exactly "average") and Doc said that if we go full term, he'd be between 7-7.5 lbs. She said herself that is not usually a completely accurate measurement because it measures so much more than just baby.

  • I have been measuring about 2 weeks ahead since about 18 weeks as well - and have gained only 15 pounds (all belly).  I was concerned about a big baby too, but ended up having an extra ultrasound due to going into PTL at 27 weeks, which showed more than an average amount of amniotic fluid.  So.... you could just have more fluid which makes your uterus larger, although baby isn't bigger than he/she's supposed to be.
