Someone commented that they used an accordian style file folder (specifically for artwork) from Michael's or Joann Fabrics. I'm going to be looking for one of those this weekend.
Also, for the parishable items (for example: P decorated a pumpkin this year), or items that are bulky or just too big to store - someone else commented that they take a picture of the item and store that instead.
Yes, I have a hanging file in our file cabinet in the den. We have a clothesline type thing with clips from Land of Nod on the wall in the playroom where I display about 5 or 6 things at a time. He comes home from daycare with several things per week and he is only 2 but I save everything.
Having three dd's it's hard to store all their artwork, so I only pick and choose the ones I like best and I have a tote for them with their names on them and stick my favorites in the tote!
