Breastmilk storage

I was planning on just using Medela storage bags after reading some reviews on other bags. However, now I was thinking that the best invention that would be made would be a bag that you could pump straight into, freeze, then warm it up in that same bag and put it straight onto a bottle nipple (or something like that). Then toss the bag. Wouldn't that be awesome? Then I saw the Playtex One Step Storage Kit... here's the link

https://store.yummymummystore.com/product/1228

This, from what I assume, is like the "old" drop in bags that my mom used to have when she used them for my sister and I. This, where the bag folds over the top and the top of the bottle is screwed on right over the bag, doesn't seem to me that it would be reliable to seal well. I believe any pumped breast milk is liquid GOLD! So, if it were to spill or leak I'd definitely freak out.

Anyone use this in the past? Or heard anyone who has? I wonder...I'm gonna do some more research.

Re: Breastmilk storage

  • I have a Medela pump and found this storage set. It's easier than bags (or I hope it to be) since I can pump right into these tubes. Then I can freeze the tube. Then when defrosted it comes with a bottle top so you can feed the baby right from this tube/bottle. Seems like it'll work great for us, maybe it's what you're looking for.

Well, we got a bunch of very similar tubes from the hospital last time and STUPID ME told SO to throw them away. I have no idea why. I lost my mind, I guess. It has a pop top, instead of a screw on top. These would work, but they won't hold  A LOT of breast milk, either. We'll see...I'm glad you sent me the link, though. They are what I was looking for besides bags.

From my experience with DS, those will work for you until you start making more milk, unless you pump into larger bottles and then pour smaller quantities into the tubes.

I know nothing about he playtex brand. I did try to pump straight into the Medela bags only to have them fall off. And yes, it is liquid gold. It was frustrating. I pumped into bottles and poured it into bags in specific quantities so I could give DS the right amount depending on how much he was taking. So I usually filled them in 1, 2, and 3 oz quantities so I could mix and match to make the amount he needed without wasting any.

That's a great idea! I never thought of that!

Those bottles are really small.  I only used them for the first couple weeks and then moved up to the 5oz ones.  At some point I moved up to the 8oz bottles.

We registered for lansinoh bags too.  Do you know how many ounces they hold?  Once you got to 8 oz, did you pump into the bottle and then pour into the bags to freeze as needed?  Thanks!

  • I used the Lansinoh bags, and really liked them. My boobs always pumped out different amounts depending on the time of day, or which boob it was, so I just pumped into bottles then (very carefully!) poured them into the bags in the amounts I needed.

I also used an ice cube tray to freeze one ounce portions. This was especially handy when DS started eating cereal and pureed veg/fruits and I wanted to water it down with just a little milk.

Same concept - but I bought a set of these trays. They freeze in 1 oz tubes, so you can slide the frozen tube right into the bottle.

On a side note - I had a terrible time with Lansinoh bags - I lost so much milk from broken/leaky bags. Once we switched to Medela we never had a problem. They're a little more pricey, but once you loose a single bag of milk down the drain, the extra cost is worth it!

Interesting, I liked the Lansinoh bags better.  They seemed to flatten out more, taking up less storage space.  We never had an issue with breaking or leaking.
