  • I'd like to know too, I've heard prefolds are the way to go but I know nothing about them lol.

We did it with 2 dozen orange edge prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers, a dozen kissaluvs size 0, four or five Thirsties XS covers, and a few Snappis. That let us wash every other day. I only opted for two styles of diapers because I wanted to try both.

My kids both grew out of the GMDs after 4-6 weeks so at that point we upgraded to infant Osocozy prefolds. By 2 months DS was in his pocket dipes part time, full time by 3 months (when i had enough of a stash for full time!). DD appears to be on the same schedule (though this time I bought some Rumparooz pockets and they fit earlier than others so she's been in those at night for a few weeks).

  • I have heard great things about prefolds for newborns.  I actually started with GMD Workhorse fitteds orange edge.  I got 36 of them with the snaps to make things as easy on DH as I could.  These were his favorite diapers for a long time.  We used Thirsties covers with them and it worked great for the first six weeks.  We also used some BG 3.0 Newborn size which were given to us, but if we only had the Workhorse we would have been fine.

  • We had a terrible time with prefolds...too bulky on a newborn (and my newborn wasn't small! 9lbs) We preffered a combination of Lil Joeys, Swaddlebees Newborn Simplex, and GroVia Newborn AIOs. The Lil Joeys were great for the time until the cord stump fell off. The Swaddlebees were our favorite, but the most expensive of the three. The Grovia's were great, but took the longest to dry.

  • I've heard that regular, one size pockets will fit a baby around 10 pounds. My son was 12 pounds by 2 months. Would it be worth it to buy all those prefolds to use just for probably a month? I'm thinking we may just use disposibles until 10 pounds.
  • I got 18 of the bummis newborn prefolds and 24 of the next size.  I have 6 covers.  I also have an assortment of about 10 aio's to try.  (a few grovia, lil joeys, softbums)

We are waiting for the circumcision to heal before trying them out, but I'm really glad I ordered the newborn size prefolds- I originally wasn't going to, and at almost 8lbs, the other size definitely would not be fitting LO yet.

It's up to you, but prefolds are cheap and you will go through so many diapers a day with a newborn you'd come out ahead financially. Plus later you can use the prefolds in your pocket dipes for extra absorbency.
