Bicycles - baby seats, helmets etc

I was just given a bicycle and I'm excited about it.  I want to get a baby seat for it and use the bike to get around town a bit this summer.  (I'm thinking it would be good exercise and save money on gas)  It has been awhile (college) since I've had a bike.

How old does LO have to be before they can go in the bike seat.  do they make helmets for babies?  How fast do you think LO would out grow a baby helmet?

Is it hard to ride a bike with an extra 20+lbs on the back?

Re: Bicycles - baby seats, helmets etc

  • I believe bike seats for children are a 1yr + item

Bike helmets for children start as small as 6 months.

  • most bike seats I've researched are for 1 year and older.  We wanted something for DD for this summer but it doesn't look like we have any good options

  • Unfortunately, bike seats and trailers are not recommended until a year. I think it's because of the amount of bouncing that happens on a bike and a baby's neck. We got my daughter a toddler helmet when she turned one and it still fits her a year later (and she has a big head).
