Egg Retrieval Question...

So...when I woke up from ER this time, I was in  A LOT of pain.  My nurse indicated she had the pain meds ready, anticipating a considerable amount of pain.  When I asked 'Why' she indicated during the Egg Retrieval my RE and nurses used considerable amount of manipulation and pressure to reach the left Ovary.

Does anyone know exactly what that means? My nurse is calling me tomorrow with Fert Report and follow up, i'll definitely ask her then.

My belly feels like it's been crushed by a bus and my lower back feels *broken*...

They sent me home with a good supply of Vicodin, but that is not sitting well on my stomach :(. I'm trying not to whine / complain, I feel extremely blessed this round with 19 eggs....I'm actually in shock, I experienced "tears of joy" when my RE spoke with me.  She thought I was in so much pain..really, I was just in shock from 19. I'm extremely grateful I have made it this far with IVF#2....

Congratulations to all the successful ER today! You are a strong group of ladies!!!

I had a similar experience lately, but with a d&c.  The nurses had to quite forcefully push down on certain abdominal areas so the RE could reach where he wanted to. I had exterior bruising from it and felt like I had been repeatedly kicked in the gut.  You can get pretty roughed up in ER especially if you have a sneaky ovary.  Sounds like that's what happened to you.  Use a heating pad for the discomfort.  Congrats on the awesome number!

Thank You AmCheri! I think i'll ditch the microwave heat packs and have the DH run out for a heating pad!

I had the same thing happen during my ER yesterday. My nurse had to push down on my left ovary so that the dr could get to the follicles. You will start feeling better tomorrow. GL!

A lot of Post ER pain also seems correlated to a higher # of eggs retrieved, at least on this board.

And I agree that if you had a tricky ovary that could be the reason.

    :::::squeamish alert spoiler::::::::

I was told by my doc that they like to make 1 poke through the vaginal wall and 1 poke into the ovary per side. Each follicle collapses making the next one available (think of the ovary as a multichambered soap bubble) - if you had a tricky ovary it's possible that they had to do more than one poke per side and that could be what's causing some of the pain.

Anyways, sorry you're going through this.

Sorry you are in so much pain from your ER.

Both my RE's (different clinics) have always had a hard time finding or seeing my left ovary.  It seems that the left ovary tends to hide behind the end of the bowel which curves on the left side.  I have IBS and it causes lots of issues with constipation.  I know if you haven't had a decent BM it even is harder to see/find.

So during my ER I kept coming out of the twilight sleep because I was in so much pain from all the pushing and prodding on that side.  I know the RE had to work extra hard to get me the 10 eggs out of me and I'm so thankful he did.

Also, my first RE said that sometimes an ovary will become so large from stims that it will run out of room and will actually flip itself on top of the uterus.

I hope you start feeling relief soon and recovery from the trauma quickly!

Yep Sad I was in and out the entire time.  I will never forget the pain.  LOL!

The nurse could tell I was very uncomfortable but they could only give me a dose of the meds every few minutes.  I can't remember what the actual drug was but It wasn't very sedating during the procudure that is for sure!  Afterwards in the recovery room I seemed more groggy and maybe napped for 30mins or so then I was wide awake.  I ate some saltines crackers and drank a sierra mist.  They made me go tinkle before I could leave and once I did that I was on my way home.

I didn't even nap anymore that day.

I am so sorry you are in so much pain. I had issues with hiding ovaries as well. I noticed IVF #2 was pretty rough in comparison to #1. Everything hurt more and my body didn't respond as well as the first time. I was in more pain after ER as well but nothing too bad. I had told my RE to do what he needed to do to get the eggs if he was able to. Maybe your RE just went for it. Im sorry it was at the expense of your ovaries! I dont think you can take advil but man 4 advil really do the trick. I hope you get plenty of rest and feel better soon! HUGS! And congrats on 19 eggs!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you ladies!!!!

Winofairy you might be on to something.  I have IBS as well, and I fight with constipation daily :(.  I'm going to speak with my nurse this afternoon to see if we can "get things moving", I really think that is contributing to the pain.

I am thankful for the pain pills, but I'm also a bit leary to take them!!!!!
