<--look, bigoted asshoIes: the LGBT parenting board!

They're being so "in your face" by coming to this hetero website!

Does that mean you won't frequent the Bump anymore?   Alas!

What about bisexual people, and transgendered folks?

I love them too. I always want to ask a transgendered person if they prefer that term over just male/female/gay/lesbian. Know what I mean? Are there any out here? Let me know, kthx.

  • I assume, like everyone, they just want to be called by their (chosen) name.

I'm bisexual, but if someone called me "that bisexual" I'd probably be pretty pissed, unless it was my gay bestie, in which case I'd be like "WTFever b!tch."

Well, yes. I just mean when someone is describing you. For instance, that women over there needs help. As opposed to, that transgender person over there needs help. I can't think of a better example but along those lines.

  • OH NOES!!!

In that situation, I think the preferred description is their true gender, not the one their sex. So, if Mike was born Michelle and is transgendered, you would say, "Hey, that guy could use a hand."

Or, "that person needs help"? Maybe?
Person is totally cool, too. But there's nothing wrong with, when it is obvious which gender a person is, calling them "man" or "woman". If you're unsure, though (like, if you know that Mike is transgendered but he still has to go to the office as Michelle, or if Mike is still in transition and you aren't sure which gender assignment is appropriate) then "person" is definitely the safest, best term.

This is a little bit of a tangent but at my last job we had an employee who was born a woman but living as a man and was going through the medical procedures, etc.  We all received an email from him explaining the situation because most everyone knew  him as a woman.  His email explained that he would prefer to be referred to with masculine pronouns and his new name but he went on to say that he undstood that it will take people time to get used to this and that all he asked was for people to try their best to be mindful of his wishes and he would not be offended if someone misspoke.

No real point to that little story but all I could think was how difficult that must have been because I'm sure there were people on staff who didn't receive the news well.  Poor guy probably had major anxiety over it.  I can't even imagine.

Someone should, dude. I'm bisexual, I'm an Atheist, I have a love-child with my baby daddy / life-companion who I am not married to and is 15.5 years older than me, I am one semester away from having an advanced degree in the humanities, and I live in Texas.

Eff flowers. I need a moving truck.
