Which med has worked best for your LO's reflux? My almost three week old has some kind of reflux issue going on. We are going to the dr. on Weds. and I'm going to ask him about the different med options. How long after starting meds did you notice a change? Also, have you cut out diary from your diet or have the meds reduced the symptoms enough on it's own? I'm afraid if I cut out dairy my supply will tank. Any advice in this area would be helpful!
Re: Which med for reflux?
DS was on Zantac for almost 6 months, and was changed over to Prevacid at 7 months. The Zantac was helpful initially, but as dosing is weight-dependent you need to be vigilant about monitoring and regular increases as he grows. Looking back, I dont know that DS got full relief from the Zantac. He has had improvement on the Prevacid, and we are hoping it continues to give him relief.
I also cut dairy and soy out of my diet when DS started Zantac. But for one "test" of dairy, I haven't had dairy or soy since November. Needless to say the test did not go well, so we've stuck with it. Other ladies on this board have eliminated other items as well and/or lived -- and breastfed -- without for even longer periods of time. It can be done. Check out the weekly MSPI (milk and soy protein intolerance) check in for some ideas and commiseration. Good luck!

Motherhood is not for wimps
My LO started with Zantac at around 2 weeks. At the time, she was BF+ formula (I did not have enough milk).Zantac worked for about 3 weeks (took effect almost immediately) then it stopped working.
Then she went on Prevacid, and exclusively breast feeding.Prevacid worked right away.I cut out dairy for 3 weeks but it made no difference in her reflux.
She's still on Prevacid. She also has eczema and had hives, so we did an allergy test and turned out, that she's allergic to eggs, tree nuts, dairy and soy (dairy got the lowest class in the test).I'm on a strict diet, but so far there is no improvement in either the reflux or the skin issues.I still have enough milk to feed DD, but barely. But cutting dairy only did not reduce my supply at all.
These medications don't eliminate the spit ups in babies, only block the acids so spitting up is not painful for them.Prevacid dosage also needs to be adjusted as your LO grows.
Good luck!
DS has been on Zantac since about 2.5 months of age. It is annoying that it is weight based and the dosage needs to be increased quite frequently. But it has helped him a lot. I EP and he used to have projectile vomiting, arching his back during feedings, coughing, gagging and hoarseness before the Zantac. That has all since gone away. We know we need to increase it when his symptoms start to slowly return.
I recently cut out dairy because DS started having green, mucousy stools, along with refusing to eat, about 2 weeks ago. They checked his stool for blood and it was positive. So I cut out dairy 1 week ago when he was diagnosed with milk protein allergy. I'm wondering if cutting out dairy will also improve his reflux.
