Snacks between meals?

Do you all regularly give your LO snacks between meals?  I generally don't and it never really occurred to me to give him snacks but I'm thinking maybe I'm in the minority here.  He BFs between meals but doesn't get, for example, crackers or Os or dried fruit or anything like that.

Re: Snacks between meals?

  • DS doesn't usually get a snack between breakfast and lunch but he always gets one between lunch and dinner since there's more time between those meals.

  • We give B a snack between breakfast and lunch, and his afternoon bottle and dinner.  Typically it's easy foods he can just eat by himself - Cheerios, crackers (the kid would eat an entire box of Townhouse, I think!), puffs, or crunchies.  We do offer the sippy with water, too.
  • M eats like a bird, a few bites here and there. She would not last with just 3 meals, she needs a little something every 1.5-2 hours. Normally in between meals we do Os (her fav) or a bit of whatever I'm snacking on, BM, sippy of water, etc.
  • You know, I never thought about it.  He typically has smaller bottles, so he tends to have more smaller bottles so he typically just takes those in between meals.  Well, now that I'm typing, he does have a mum mum in between meals sometimes but not on a schedule though.

ETA: I have to change mine all together because after I said my original response I started thinking of all of these other things he gets as a snack, cheese, fruit, yogurt smoothies, etc....  I guess I really don't pay attention, I just do it, LOL.

  • Yes we do cheese sticks or wedges, fruit, goldfish crackers, etc.  He basically gets what my daughter gets.
  • We do snacks between meals, usually fruit or yogurt. Not always in the morning, it depends when he wakes up and how much time between breakfast and lunch.

  • DS doesn't usually get a snack in the am except for maybe a few puffs. There's a longer strech between lunch and dinner so I typically give him a snack in the afternoon....usaully some cheese and fruit.

  • No, we don't usually, unless we're out and I'm using it as a distraction. He still BF 5-6x a day, so between BF and 3 meals, I already feel like I'm feeding him non-stop. I figure once we get to the point where he is drinking a lot of his milk with his meals, rather than between, we'll add snacks.

  • She doesn't usually have a morning snack.  She naps usually 9:30 to 11 then we run errands and she has lunch.  On Wednesday we go to playgroup and have to be there at 11 so I usually put her down a bit early for her nap and then give her a snack before we go (if we have time).

She always has an afternoon snack.  Lunch is usually 12 or 12:30, then has a bottle around 1 and a nap around1:30 or 2.  She has a snack (usually fruit and cheese or yogurt, maybe some crackers) and then we have dinner at 6.

  • Yes, she gets a snack in late afternoon- usually a veggie and fruit.  Like canned peas and slices of strawberries.  Sometimes she gets half a graham cracker.

  • Right now DD is eating every 2 hours or so because she doesn't eat much at any one meal. I realize that feeding her like a hummingbird isn't help this issue but a month ago, she was eating such small amounts of food that I figured we'd never get off formula. Then she started to chow down. I'm sticking to our schedule for two more weeks, until school is over. Then we will try to get on a 3 meals with a snack or two schedule. I don't need crackers much at all. DD's snacks are the same stuff she eats a meals...yogurt, cheese, fruit/veggies, beans, etc.

At daycare she gets a snack in the afternoon. Usually yogurt and sometimes also fruit. They are transitioning her to the toddler schedule with is breakfaste before 8am, lunch at 11:30, and then a snack at 3. Since she's there till at least 5:30 they said she should have a high protein snack so hold her over till dinner.

When we're at home though I haven't really been giving her a snack unless she's fussing for something.

  • She doesn't get snacks consistently, I suppose b/c between 3 solid meals and breastfeeding, naps and an early bedtime I don't know when I'd even give her a snack.  Sometimes if we are running late for a meal due to being out or something, I'll let her suck down one of the Ella's or Plum Baby pouches ,which I always keep on hand, or some mum mums.

  • Alexis is a grazer, if I tried to only feed her snacks and her 3 meals she would never eat enough. I tried doing meals only and no snacks and that just did not work, she would barely eat at meal times. I did the grazing with my older kids also it works much better since I know that they are eating enough.

  • At daycare, he gets an am and a pm snack (always fruit and water in am). At home we just do an afternoon snack. Afternoon snack is usually fruit, cheese, goldfish, Cheerios, graham crackers, yogurt, maybe cubed ham.

  • We weren't doing any sort of formal snack between meals until I realized that giving her one before her nap helped her nap to go from about 40 minutes to 90-120 minutes. Now I always try to give her a little something, I like those longer naps!

  • We do one between lunch and dinner because it's a longer stretch. It's usually fruit, yogurt, cheese or something along those lines. Also, A doesn't nurse anymore and no longer gets bottles (she'll get sippy's with water between meals but thats it) so she's not really getting any other calories between meals.  So she does snack.  Occasionally she'll eat something between breakfast and lunch too if she had breakfast really early or if I know lunch will be delayed.

Exactly this.  The "snack-type" foods (freeze dried fruits, yogurt melts, cheese, puffs, etc.)  I give are usually just at the beginning or end of his meal as a way to keep him occupied while I prepare dinner or do dishes.  I also usually bring snacks with me when we're out

Occasionally, I will give DS bits of whatever I'm eating in between meals, just to see if he will eat it.  While he was playing in his playpen the other day, I was feeding him bits of pita and hummus which he LOVED.

I cut up fruit in the morning, put it in a container that I leave on the coffee table.  She eats from it throughout the day.  She doesn't eat substantial meals yet though.

  • He gets a morning & afternoon snack.  Prior to last week, he was only having a afternoon one, but then we had them drop his morning bottle at school, so we replaced it with a snack.
