High-Risk Pregnancy

back from L&D..gallbladder?

hi ladies,

i've usually posted about gd-related questions.

today, my ob sent me over to l&d for some monitoring, & iv fluids. I've been vomiting all week, yesterday was the worst, couldn't keep down anything. she was concerned i was dehydrated so wanted me to get fluids & some zofran.

she order an u/s of the abdomen, and they found i had "sludge" & gallstones in my gallbladder.

i'm too pregnant to do surgery, so it will have to wait until after baby.

i just was wondering if any of you had any experience with this? she told me to just watch my fatty food intake to try and keep it under control.

it's not bothering me, i'm not in pain, i guess the only symptom was the vomiting. so they let me go home, and just keep an eye on it, and keep track if i'm running a temp.

any info on pregnancy related gallbladder issues?

thanks!

Re: back from L&D..gallbladder?

  • About 3 weeks after delivering ds I ended up in the ER from terrible pain that turned out to be gallstones. For me, it's from gaining/losing so quickly in pregnancy that increased my risk as I otherwise eat fairly healthy and exercise. Anyhow, they said to rush to the ER if I had another attack and in the meantime to consult surgery. I saw surgery a few weeks later and they said that unless I had another attack, to not worry about it. I think I may have had one other, but it was more mild and I was traveling at the time, and have had nothing since so never did the surgery. Now I'm pregnant again and sure hoping it doesn't come back. I think it's fairly common as I know a few others who went through this too, some who did have the surgery.

  • After spending probably 90% of my first try vomiting 15-20+ times per day I had it removed at 17 weeks. The no fat/low fat diet didn't work for me because I had too many stones but I'm told many people never have the surgery thanks to the diet.

  • thank you ladies for your replies!!!

i wish they would have checked this early on, i had "morning sickness" almost this entire pregnancy, which i'm sure if checked earlier would have been found to be the gallbladder, and they could have removed it already.

hoping it subsides until LO arrives!

  • Stick with your GD diet.  It will help a lot.  My attacks stopped while on the diet.  About 2 weeks postpartum I got a skim mocha and was almost in the ER.  I had mine removed when DS2 was 4 weeks.  I didn't realize I had been having attacks since DS1 was born.  I knew something was wrong, but didn't know it was my gall bladder.

If you plan on BFing it is fine for the surgery. I spoke with a LC and the anesthesiologist and I only had to pump and dump one time.  The anesthesiologist wrote down the  time of my last dose of meds.  I brought DS2 to the surgery center and BFed before they gave me anything and also pumped.  While in surgery DH took him to the sitter.  I had to pump one side for a few days after because I was too sore to hold DS on that side.  He was a big boy.

Good luck.  You will feel so much better after the surgery.

  • My gall bladder is terrible but due to my five losses they will not operate on me until after I give birth. I am on percoset for the pain and promethanzine for the vomiting. I was so very sick I wish some one had caught it back in my first trimester it was caught accidentally when I went in thinking I was having contractions because of the pain. From what I hear I will feel amazing once its out. Just stick to low fat diet avoid cheese

  • I had horrible stomach issues when I was pregnant w/DD#1. About 10 months after I had DD#1 I had another gallstone attack. The pain radiated in my upper abdomen and went all the around in my back. I was sick for three days before my DH finally took me to the ER where they found out I had a gallbladder full of stones. I spent a week in the hospital, had three surgery, two of which the doctor tried to removed stones from my bile duct. I did finally have my gallbladder removed. That was almost 2 years ago and I'm so happy that I did have it removed.

Definitely watch the fatty foods and good luck.
