My insurance covered a pump, which is awesome, but I had to use this medical supply store that only sold Ameda Carry All....
Mat first my nipple was pinching / rubbing and hurt really bad, so I ordered the replacement (larger) flanges. Now I get NO milk coming out while I pump. Like zero.... Not sure if suction is bad (nipple is still pulling)
Wtf? I'm starting to stress. I need to pump, I would like a supply up so I don't have to supplement when I go back to work. Also, if the pump doesn't work, I wont be able to pump at work at all.
Re: If Ameda pump did not work for you.... Or if that's what you use
Are you EPing? You don't have a baby ticker, but from your pregnancy ticker, I think your baby is super young still, yes? You really don't need to pump until 5-6 weeks PP. In the beginning, your baby's tummy is so tiny, they don't need that much at all.
Once you get into a routine with pumping, it becomes like a learned response. I set up and prep the same way every time. I do compressions to make the most of my pumping breaks at work. I do have to pump for ~30 minutes b/c my second letdown is ~20 minutes in.
If you think the pump itself is defective, Ameda has super awesome customer service. Give them a call! They are really nice and helpful.
Finally....if the pump doesn't work, that doesn't mean you can't pump at work. There are tons of kinds of pumps available. Just try a different one if you don't like this one you have.
I have the Ameda Purely Yours and it doesn't work well for me either. The shields are the right size but it just doesn't work well for me. For some reason only one side works well, the other doesn't suction well. I have to constantly be uncapping and recapping the yellow cap because the rubber piece gets stuck within itself.
So I have switched over to a Medela hand pump and I love it. I thought it would be so time consuming but I get so much more milk so much quicker.
Sorry, we're having computer problems & I have been bumping from my phon since LO was born... can't or don't know how to change ticker from here.
DD is 3 weeks old. I didn't know when to start pumping because with DS I only BF for 2 months but I had a large stock pile (over produced milk like crazy).
I have not been EP'ing but would be interested in pumping more if I could get a hang of it.
Im sure there are a ton of pumps out there but I can't really afford a couple hundred dollar pump especially IF it's my boobs not the pump.
Im iffy about a hand pump.... Just not educated enough about pumps & breastfeeding
I have the Lansinoh double electric which is basically the same as an Ameda Purely Yours.
I have large nipples and used the large flanges with the pump with good success. I usually turn the speed all the way up and then put the suction at no more than half way or a little more. It can take your body a little while to respond to the pump.
When I intially started pumping, it could take up to 7 minutes for me to get a let down. But once my body adjusted I could pump 4 to 6 oz total in less than 10 minutes.
So I think it's a great little pump. You may just need to keep trying....try to relax. Stress will definitely prevent a letdown from happening. Also, are you using a pumping bra? I could never just sit and hold the flanges, but with a pumping bra I could read or get on the computer and had no problems.
Make sure the little white pieces are attached to the bottom of the flanges properly and that the flanges are secured tightly to the bottles. If my white pieces weren't on properly or had a tiny tear, then I couldn't get proper suction to elicit letdown.
You could always consult a lactation consultant, mine was very helpful when I had pumping questions as well!
Good luck!
Thanks! ....maybe I'm just trying to pump too early (LO is only 3 weeks) my mom said to call my lactation lady, she was great with the latching problem I had but was unsure if she'd know about my pump. I will try to call her Tuesday.
