We let DS have a blanket in the crib/PnP. He likes to smush it up around it face and twiddle it between his fingers while he falls asleep. We take it away once he is asleep and keep a close eye on him until then so we don't feel like its a big deal. However, the "No Blankets" is so strictly reinforced that I always feel like Big Brother knows and someone is going to swoop in and say we are unfit parents.
(Please don't think we are unfit. I promise he is perfectly safe and not left unattended. )
We let DD have a blanket at first too. The kid will not go to sleep unless she has a blanket touching her face. I sit next to her while she falls asleep and then take the blanket.
