Total newbie: help me!

My husband and I would really like to try out cloth diapers. We have the time and we are having a nanny in the house after I return to work who is okay with it.

Questions:

1) Are there different diaper sizes? If so, should we wait until the baby is born before buying?

2) How many diapers do you recommend?

3) We have a high-efficiency washer and I hear this is not good for cloth diaper washing. Do any of you ladies have experience with washing cloth diapers in a high efficiency washer?

4) Any basic advice for parents who are undecided on cloth and disposable?
