Water Aerobics

Has anyone done this while pregnant?

Until this morning, I hadn't done water aerobics since college (8 years ago) and am considerably heavier now and sporting a 24-week bump. And that bump feels awfully pendulous in the water, I found out. Jumping out of the water is pretty uncomfortable, and feels like pulling in my pelvic area.

I try to listen to my body and if something hurts (like the jumps) then I'll take it easy and won't push as hard on that move. I've been exercising throughout my pregnancy but just wonder if anyone else feels this way when exercising in the water?

Should I maybe stay on land, or no need to be concerned?

Re: Water Aerobics

  • I will let you know in a couple hours. I'm going to a class in 45 min. I think water aerobics is a great option because of the extra weight we are carrying, less stress in our joints. Definitely listen to your body and if something is uncomfortable or painful switch to a different move that keeps the heart rate going but doesn't hurt until they switch to the next move. I'll report back in a few hours in how I felt in the water!

  • So, I just got back from water aerobics, and it was uncomfortable! I felt the pressure really low down like I needed to pee really badly. It felt this way probably 60-70% of the time. Once I got out of the water, that feeling went away... although I did have to pee. It was a good workout, but I actually think I feel more comfortable in spin class. I am not sure if I will go back or not. But, to answer your question... you are not the only one who finds it uncomfortable.

  • Thanks so much for posting back!

I keep hearing how supposedly great water aerobics is during pregnancy but yeah... kind of an uncomfortable way to exercise for some of us, I guess. Glad I'm not the only one!

  • I teach aqua fit 3-4 times a week and don't have much of a problem.  I don't jump as much as I used to.  You can modify everything even just swimming or using a kick board (obviously not in class, on your own) is an awesome workout.

  • I'm doing a water aerobics class also but it's designed specially for pregnant women.  I've always swam so being in the water was the most natural way for me to exercise.  I don't have a problem with it at all.

My water aerobics teacher says that the most important thing is to keep your belly underwater at all times that way there's less pressure.
