Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Italian Bread Crust for Teething?

Hi ladies,   I always come here for the best responses for my FTM questions.   My LO is MSPI and we are not introducing any milk products except maybe small amount of yogurt in a few weeks....Baby is eating pureed vegetables and fruits in addition to her Neocate bottles.

I feel that she might be ready to gum something harder and was wondering if any of you moms gave your teething babies the end of the Italian Bread (since it contains no  milk products) to chew on.....Our fear is the choking and I am afraid she will get too much at one time.......Any suggestions would be appreciated...TIA

I've never heard of giving bread crust. I did give DD a cold celery stalk, though, and that worked well.

Oh, how many teeth does your DD have? I think you have to be careful about anything you give if she's able to "bite" off a piece. We never had a problem with the celery stalk (she has 6 teeth now).

What about a pizza crust? DD loves those and has been gumming them since about 7 months old. She only has 2 teeth and can actually eat a whole piece now. But as something nice and hard on her gums (until it gets mushy!), pizza crust would be good.

Excellent idea! I totally forgot about pizza crust. It's firm but becomes mushy. The Italian bread would concern me because it's kind of...flaky (?) and the flakes can be kind of sharp.

  • DS has never been a nibbler so the only thing I can ever give him is a Sassy Feeder or his rings or else he shoves the whole thing in his mouth. I know celery is on the list of foods for high risk choking hazard

  • MIL gave DS the end of a crusty Italian bread.  The first time, I was unsure, but I watched him like a hawk, and it actually worked out well.  He's never bitten a piece off.  Any pieces that flaked off, were light enough for him to eat with his gums.

He enjoyed it, and now he's graduated to a slice!  Big Smile

That is my go-to teething tactic. And my baby screaming tactic. And my "eating dinner right after the baby" tactic.
