what do you mean by women's rights?

When people say Palin is against Women's rights...  is it mainly that she opposes abortion?  She breaks a lot of stereotypes, and I don't think sets women back at all.  I think she more closely represents me than Hillary does.  I'm sooo getting flamed for this...  It's honestly how I feel.

Re: what do you mean by women's rights?

  • I agree with you completely!!!

But, it is that she is against abortion and the whole rape kit issue.  But, I never would have even considered voting for Hilary!!!

  • I fully admit what I'm about to say is catty as hell. Look at how she dresses. IMHO, open-toed satin stiletto platforms are not the footwear for a head of state. How can I take her seriously when she's winking at the camera with her pretty little shoes? It's the winking and the 1950's secretary suits that really bother me. The party is blatantly parading her around like "lookie here, a real lady!"  Clinton got a lot of flack for her ugly pants suits, but at least she was trying to show her validity as a person, not a woman.

IRL, I have yet to speak w/ a women, ages 25-60 that was not incredibly offended by her appointment. I would not have been offended at a female VP pick who has a track record. Kay Bailey Hutchens (sp) from TX or Elizabeth Dole, perhaps.

as far as the rape kit thing-it is nothing short of disgusting. So, you've just been RAPED and oh yea, pony up your own $$ while you're at it. Nothing takes your mind off one of the worst things to happen to a women than being treated like a social outcast.

  • It has to do with her not supporting the right to choice, her charging women for their own rape kits (which is treating victims as criminals or at least at fault for their attack), her support of abstinence-only education, and her lack of support for mothers in need (flame away, but you can't educate abstinence as the only option, not offer abortion, and then refuse to pay for unwanted pregnancies).

  • The biggest issues, to me:  she is against sex eduation and favors abstinence-only education, which has statistically been shown to be ineffective and results in more pregnancies...and then she doesn't want women to have a choice in what to do with those pregnancies, even in the case of rape/incest.  She's opposed to same-sex marriage, which is a civil rights issue that affects both women and men.
  •  I passionately disagree with the idea that preventing education and birth control, billing rape victims for investigation into their case as well as criminalizing something that a lot of women have to face-for various reasons-are pro-women's rights.

It all sounds pretty anti woman to me.

Even though I can't see myself having an abortion, I also REALLY can't see myself voting for someone who would work to make it impossible for another woman to have one safely.

    Yes

Also, look at how far her abstinence only ideas got with her daughter, whom she is now encouraging (ie forcing) into marriage.

  • teen marriage is ALWAYS the best choice! Yes

    you betcha!

  • I strongly oppose palin based on her abortion stance.  I just don't think anyone has the right to force someone to give birth to a child, particularly in the case of young children or people who have babies who have severe defects.  I also think her deep religious bent makes her incapable of seperation of church and state in a meaningful way.

I think abstanence only education sets women back greatly.  1 in 10 women give birth before 20 years old.  For many of these women, these births have devistating life time effects both economically and emotionally.  3 in 10 get pregnant before they are 20 and that number is rising, not falling.

  • Why is her fashion choices coming into play here? Perhaps that's just how she likes to dress!

    I am anti-abstinence only education, but I am pro-life.

  • What I personally mean is the right to make desicions about our reproductive rights. Whether you choose to abort one embryo or create 17 in a lab, you have the right to make the decision for yourself. There is so much out there about life beginning at conception/ when sperm meets egg. If abortion is ended bc it is decided that an embryo is a life, then we can kiss all IVF/ IUI goodbye too. If a woman is a murder for terminating one embryo, then imagine what people will think when they hear how many embryos are created and thrown out for one IVF cycle. (I realize not all are thrown out and that some couples choose to freeze any viable embryos)

To me, voting for someone who is anti-choice is taking away something so many women have worked so hard for; the right to choose. I would not choose IVF but I won't begrudge someone the right to if they so desire no matter how many embryos go unused, the same way I may not choose abortion but I wouldn't call someone a murder for thier choice to terminate one embryo.

  • Ug. I was going to ignore the comment by GHM. Like I said, it was catty. Plain and simple. Being catty has no point other than being a b!tch. Which I fully admitted. I'm not not voting for Palin based on her footwear. Seriously, where is the humor that used to be all over this board? It's satire and well, I guess it does not come across.

I'm not voting for Palin because of her stance on women's rights and her hypocracy. She sold the "luxury" jet at a loss to the state. And seriously, the market for old, $2m jets is small. Not many people want them. Then proceeded to charge the state over $21K to date for the cost of her family to travel w/ her. In Alaska, an airplane is not a luxury for certain communities. So now she has to waste her time traveling w/ the masses, chartering aircraft to areas that aren't accessible by vehicle or boat (those to exist all over the state), and charging the state for chartering of said aircraft and crew.
