May be flameful re: the election

Aside from the partisan crud I am really excited about the possibility that we won't have a middle age white guy in the white house. And no that is not why I am voting for Obama. But I have to admit I'm giddy over the thought that we are thisclose to something so historic.

Re: May be flameful re: the election

  • I'm just giddy that the idiot will be out of office.

  • Me too.  I am soooo excited.  I have been smiling all day and I hope that smile doesn't turn into a frown tomorrow!

  • I agree it is historic. It's actually historic no matter who wins....Obama for being a young black man or Palin for being a woman VP. ?this election has gotten more people riled up than any I can remember and I've been voting since 1988.

  • Krisbri-

You don't think we'll look back at his presidency and see how fantastically he lead this country.

  • I simply cannot take Palin seriously...so it's hard for me to even think of her as VP...making history.Ick!
  • He was great with 9/11 and afganistan (sp) but after that it all went downhill very quickly.

I agree with you about Palin...she literally scares the bejesus out of me.

  • well--like it or not--if McCain wins, Palin will be making history. ;)

  • It is exciting!

But I have to say in regards to what minnas wrote that in my own experience the last two elections have been just as contentious as this one has been, if not moreso. But I am working from home now so I could be much more sheltered from the craziness. That's a definite possibility.

that is a whole lot of Hope there grace.

I think who ever becomes the next president will be doing a lot of digging out of the hole before they start shooting rainbows out of their ass at us!!!

  • I am pretty pationate about politics so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to hearing McCain's concession speach. :)

     I meant speech.

  • So, if someone says they're not voting for Obama because he's black, that's wrong.  But, saying you're not voting for McCain because he's old and white, that's OK?

Good to know.  I'll be sure not to vote for the ugly Democrat running for Senator in my state.  I don't want anymore ugly people in politics.

ETA to say it's a hypothetical "you" and not a "you" directed at anyone.

  • It really is historic either way.  We either have a bi-racial president or a female vp.
  • I personally am not voting for anyone based on the color of their skin or gender..as I stated in my OP. However, I think it's about time that it's someone other than a white male. I think that's an understandable emotion.

I think she made it pretty clear that it isn't WHY she's voting for Obama.  If I may speak for her--b/c I feel the same way--the idea of breaking the Old White Guy trend is a positive side effect, not the cause, of voting for him.  If their ages and ethnicities were reversed, I'd still be voting for Obama.

  • I should be happy about the possibility of a woman VP...but no. I don't even see her as a woman-she opposes women's rights- it just seems like a joke!

I am sure a TON of people feel that way. If the tables were turned.. like they are in my local gov... and I said "However, I think it's about time that it's someone other than a black male. I think that's an understandable emotion."

I would certainly be called racist and an ***. We have had a black male mayor for 8 years.... I don't know how the douchebag won..but he did.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Thats why she scares me!

  • Pin,you don't see a difference in your comparison? Even given that we have only had white males as presidents in our nations entire history. No difference at all?

FWIW I am not racist towards white males..I married one and gave birth to one.Stick out tongue

  • Obama's policies are what scares me.  He's the more dynamic candidate, but not tried and tested.  I hope if he does win he's one of our best presidents ever.  I'm just not seeing it.
  • pin, I think that would be a fair comparison if that office had been held by a member of your own racial group, which was the majority in the country, for the entire history of our nation.  I think your example has a ton of significant differences from what the OP said.  Whether it seems "fair" or not, I think the context of a comment like that really does matter in whether it's seen as offensive by most people.
  • grace, I just said almost the exact same thing as you.  I didn't see your reply before I posted mine...now I'm redundant.  And a copycat.  Oh, well!
  • but she does have a vag, technically..so...whatever. I guess she is a woman.

WHY can't a strong, smart, neutral, woman come into power? WHY do the sideways loonies have a fighting chance in such a major political position, but the women who stand for women, are shot down? Sometimes I am so let down by this country. It makes me feel like there are more sideways loonies than there are clear thinking folks who see the bigger picture.

There are genuinely people here ( in this country, not on this board-although I betcha there are some on this board, too...) who believe that a woman's menstrual cycle is enough to make her a risky choice...How worldly! ( I think some of those same people support Palin-hilariously!)

  • You said it better than I did Cubby!
  • BoF, I heart you. I really, really do.

Yes You are so on. I love that it's racist to say "I'm not voting for a black guy", but not racist to say "I'm so tired of crusty, old white guys in office."

  • I'm tired of "crusty, old white guys in office" because I'm tired of "crusty, old white guys" running the freaking country.  Have you never heard of the "old boys club?"  We have a tradition in the country of white men (particulary older, cause, well, old people run stuff...) being in charge of everything-politics, business, sports, blah, blah, blah.

Having a biracial, minority president is a huge step forward.  Much more so than a woman VP.

Other countries have had female heads of state.  No other country has had a minority head of state (South Africa not counting cause that is a whole nother ball of wax).
