Cloth Diapering

Barnyard Smell - strip?

We have that pee/barnyard smell going on in our diaper pail these days, and I noticed that our diapers smelled a little funky coming out of the washer this morning.  We've been CDing for about 5 months and I've never stripped.  Is it time?

Can someone link me (or give directions) to a good "strip" procedure (what you use)?

We have a front loader, and use (and generally like) Tiny Bubbles.  I do an pre-soak and extra rinse and the sanitary cycle for washes, and we use mostly a combo of BG 4.0's, FB perfect size, and Blueberries.

TIA!

  • Barnyard actually means you need more detergent.  You probably don't have to strip.

Ahh...good to know!  I will start with that, thanks!

Try a little more detergent and a little bit of bleach on the inserts. And try running a clean washer cycle with bleach or affresh on your machine - my washer guy said they get funky really fast

  • I find using vinegar in the rinse cycle takes away the smell.  I just toss in my downy ball with vinegar each load.  Works like a charm.  I also have BG 4.0

  • When this happens to me I just wash them with bleach.

Works everytime and a lot less work.

Usually it only happens when someon else starts the wash cycle and doesn't add enough soap.

How much bleach do you wash with?  I had heard the occassional bleach wash was good to do, but have never tried it.  Just add it with detergent at start of wash?  And how much?  Thanks :)

I have a toploader so I start filling the machine, add 1/4 cup bleach...let it agitate for a minute and then add diapers. I don't add any soap or other additivies. Wash in your normal cycle and then do a double rinse to make sure the bleach is gone...just as a preventative...I've never had a problem with it not washing out.

Use clean diapers btw. I usually just do a repeat wash after my normal load.

  • By barnyard, could we also describe it as sweaty gym socks?  I got some hand-me-downs and as soon as DD pees in them the whole room smells like a gym bag that didn't get cleaned out for a week.

I could see that being the same problem, but not the same smell.  Honest to god, when DS had barnyard, he smelled like a freakin' horse stable.  UGH.

Bleach is a good problem solver too, with hand-me-downs I would bleach immediately, I always do.  We have yeast issues, so I use a tbsp or so of bleach in almost every wash.  When there is a problem, I use 1/4c as pp said, but I have a dispenser so I don't have to wait.

  • Thanks everyone!

And yeah, it's not gym bag...it's like a stinky barn.  Or horse stable.  For sure.
