Baby Names

Sawyer?

We are having a tough, tough time deciding on a name for DS #2 and I'll be 37 weeks on Monday.  We like Sawyer, it's easy to spell and to pronounce, but it's still under 150 on the SSA list.  We always try to think of what teasing references can come from any name, and all we can come up with is Tom Sawyer, which isn't so bad.  His middle name is definitely James after DH's life-long best friends.  I have never heard of anyone named Sawyer and wondered what thoughts you all might have about it.

  • Thank you!  If it helps to decide, our last name is 3 syllables starting with an F and ending with a Y.  DS #1 is Jude.

Sawyer is nice. I can't think of any teasing mechanisms, but I should mention that I've been hearing it more and more for girls.

I was going to say the same, but I like the name Sawyer James.

  • Okay. While Lost has not been on the TV for quite some time, it had a huge cult following to it. Sawyer was a character on the show. His real name was James.

I just point that out to you because you are bound to get people asking you if you were a fan of the show.

Over all it is not a bad name.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • My DS is Sawyer, so I might be biased....

But I think it's a great name and we actually get lots of compliments on it. It's not common at all (where we live, at least), and yes, easy to spell and pronounce. When he was first born we got some comments about the show Lost, which apparently had a character named Sawyer. Or people would joke about using the 'nickname' Tom (referencing Tom Sawyer), but never anything negative or that really bothered DH and me.

  • There would be a teasing inevitability if I used Sawyer with my last name, Cochran. But unless your last name sounds like a body part, I think you're fine.

  • Thanks for the feedback so far.  I have never watched Lost, and it never occurred to me that Sawyer could be a girl's name.  This is why I came here!  I think those are both things we can live with though, so it's looking thumbs-up for Sawyer so far!  If we can have our "Yes, this is the name we're going with" moment, I will be so relieved.

I must be a part of the cult...because I immediately had this thought!!! However, I think it's a very nice name though!

I'm slow.  It took me a few minutes to figure out why this would be a bad combination, and now I am cracking up.  Yeah, that might not work.  :)

I love the name Sawyer. There is a little boy in my class named Sawyer, and he's the sweetest. As far as teasing and Tom Sawyer goes, I'm pretty certain most kiddos don't even know who Tom Sawyer is, so I think it'd probably be a non-issue.

  • I like Sawyer a lot but I will echo the warning about it going into the girl column.  My friend just had a baby and named her Sawyer Lynn.

    Sawyer James sounds nice!

    That is incredibly sad.

I also think of Sawyer/James from Lost but it can't be a bad thing to be associated with Josh Holloway, who is dreamy. ;) Cute name!

My former boss's son was named Sawyer and one day she was laughing and telling us that he came home from school and said that the kids all started calling him "Soy Sauce."  But he was really proud that they gave him a "cool" nickname, kind of like how George Costanza wanted people to call him T-Bone.  lol!

  • I met a Sawyer for the first time a few months ago (he's a baby)--at first I thought, "Huh, I didn't know that was a name, but I guess I kinda like it"...and now I LOVE it.  I think it's a great choice!

  • I had a friend named Sawyer and I always thought it was a cool name.  He was kind of adventurous and mischievous (couldn't help but think of Tom Sawyer) but good-hearted.  The name has only positive associations for me.

I have a James Sawyer!  James is after my grandfather and Sawyer is from Lost so I don't mind when people ask if we are big Lost fans.

  • Thanks, everyone!  We have decided to go for it.  He finally has a name and I'm SO glad.  I appreciate all the input, since sometimes you can't see all of the possible bad connotations for yourself.

The Soy Sauce nn cracks me up because earlier today we were talking about what kind of nn could come from Sawyer.  And I said (jokingly) that I'd probably call him Soyburger.

  • We aren't expecting our 3rd yet, but Sawyer is on our list for boys and James would likely be the middle name (after DH).  So therefore, I LIKE IT!  Big Smile
