Choroid Plexus Cysts

So yesterday I had a checkup and the Dr. told me that they she saw a Choroid Plexus Cysts on the babies brain. I know I have seen several posts on the bump about this before so I wasn't as worried from what I have read. She told me it was really nothing to worry about and that she hates even calling it a cyst. When I got home I researched it and from then on I have been really nervous. From what I read on one website ...only 1-3% of babies gets this, but on other websites it says its very common during the weeks of 16-24 of pregnancy. Anyone else got the same news and worried?

Re: Choroid Plexus Cysts

  • Me! (I feel like two-thirds of my posts recently have been in response to choroid plexus cysts, so I apologize for the redundancy.)

I was worried initially, but the radiologist's report really made me feel better. It said that, for babies with no other problems arising during an anatomy scan, a choroid plexus cyst was usually not indicative of chromosomal abnormalities. The report gave a less than 1% chance of the baby having other problems (i.e., mainly trisomy 18). Given the odds, I made a conscious choice to stop worrying and just assume that things are fine.

Rather than doing further testing, we're just going to have a third trimester ultrasound to see if the cysts have disappeared, which is usually what happens but not always. However, the cyst alone does not impact cognitive functioning, so even if it's still there, it's not a big deal. My friend's baby had a cyst too, and it was gone in the third trimester, so I'm feeling pretty hopeful.

I hope you're feeling better about it!

  • We got the same thing on one of the twins at my a/s.   My doc said it is almost always gone by 28 weeks.   Sometimes sooner.  I was not worried, but then for awhile I let it worry me.   Now that I have researched and learned that it causes no brain damage of any sort I am much more relieved.  For me, I also have some relief since we did genetic testing early on.

Hang in there.  I know none of us wants to hear anything at all other than perfection.  One of the parents here at work had a cyst and sure enough, on her babies next u/s - it was gone.

I couldn't have said it better!

We're doing the third trimester ultrasound too for peace of mind, but our doctor reassured us that we really have nothing to worry about.  There's no sense in researching online when the information from your doctor is substancial enough.  Enjoy your pregnancy and I'm sure everything will be just fine! :)

  • My little guy has one, too.  When the MD's office called, they didn't specify that it was a choroid plexus cyst and I was really worried.  But once I got the US report, I was so relieved to see that's what type of cyst it is.  It IS common and very often a normal part of development.  Time may also help ease your worries, as it has for me:)  Wishing you lots of good luck!
