Infertility

0 motile sperm

I don't post here very often. I'm more of a lurker. We've been dealing with my PCOS, had to take a break from TTC due to some health issues on my end, and we just jumped back into things this year. DH went and had his SA done and the nurse just called me with the results...0 motile sperm.

To say that I am shocked is an understatement. Thank god that I am working from home today, because I am a hot mess right now.

The nurse recommended he see a urologist, and he's going to make an appt for that. But I am coming here to see if anyone can tell me what the causes of this could be and/or success stories after seeing a urologist. And does this mean we're on the IVF path?

Thanks ladies!

Re: 0 motile sperm

  • Was this the first time he has been tested? I would see a urologist and see if there is anything that can be done. If you end up having to do IVF, ICSI has become a common procedure in most clinics and I don't think motility would be an issue at that point. I hope there are other options for you though.

  • Thanks April. He had one 2 years ago and there were 11 million then. (We followed all of the rules about abstaining for a few days beforehand, but he had a nocturnal emission the night before. He hadn't had one in decades.) He was certain that there would be more this time around.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the urologist has a plan for us. If not, we'll start saving like crazy to pay for IVF.

  • I wish you luck with this, I know how hard IF is, especially when you hit a road block. Something you might want to look into for your DH to take is: L-arginine, Zinc, Fish Oil, Co Q 10, and selenium. These are supposed to help with development, but it will take 3 months to see a difference since sperm development takes 3 months.

  • Thanks April. He currently takes CoQ10, but we'll look into the others. I'm hoping we can get an appt with the urologist soon so that we can have a plan of attack.
  • Im so sorry to hear that... I cant really add to what April said... but good luck!
  • I am sorry to hear about the SA result :(  Definitely, uro can look into more about your DH's condition and there are quite many girls with sever MFI on this board, so I hope you can get some advice here.

We are struggling with MFI and he had 0% morph on the 1st IUI.  I learned from Trouble TTC board that some of their DH take "Fertility Blend For Men", so he has been on it for 1 month+.  My RE is having us try 3 IUI and move to IVF.

As for what it causes, I am not sure but in our case, my DH had undecended testis and didn't have a corrective surgery until later, so looks like that is the main cause.

  • I feel your pain  :(

We are suffering from low motility as well :( (11-16%).

Make sure you make an appointment with a uro that specializes in MFI. This is crucial. Your RE should be able to give you a reccomendation.

If they don't find anything and you do need to go the IVF route - the good news is the ICSI procedure will completely eliminate the need for motility..... Many clinics also use this as a standard part of IVF. I know this doesn't make the financial burden easier, but know that there is some hope.

    good luck.

  • I'm so sorry, we are dealing with a similar problem. My DH had extremely low count with 0 motility. Definitely see a urologist that specializes in MFI. Unfortunately, ours couldn't find any reason for out MFI. We ended up having to do a biopsy and got enough to freeze 3 vials and are currently at the beginning of our first IVF/ICSI cycle.

    Good luck to you!

  • I'm so sorry abou the 0 sperm Sad  Definitely go see a uro!
